JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory against Howard Payne University on Thursday, picking up their first American Southwest Conference win of the season.
The Blazers jumped on the Yellow Jackets early, scoring in the 12th minute after
Ian Requilman was able to slip a shot past the Howard Payne goalkeeper.
Brendan Koehn tacked on a second, and his eighth goal of the year, when he broke off a run from 35 yards out and was able to drive into the box and slot in a a left-footed shot in the lower corner.
In the second half, Belhaven came alive scoring three times in under eight minutes.
Jake Estes made it a 3-0 Belhaven lead in the 63rd minute after
John Avery Slay was able to head a cross back into the box. Less than a minute later,
Dalton Morgan extended Belhaven's lead to 4-0 when
Andres Garcia delivered a left-footed cross into the box which was guided in by the Blazers' forward. Morgan would score the fifth and final goal of the night when he took the ball from the edge of the box, cut in on his right foot, and fired in his second goal of the night.
On the night, Belhaven outshot Howard Payne 25-12 and goalkeeper
Max Rudolph made six saves before being subbed off in the 76th minute.
With the win, the Blazers move to 7-2-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in the ASC. Belhaven will be back in action Saturday, October 5th, when they host Sul Ross State at Belhaven Bowl Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM.
