MARSHALL, Texas – The Belhaven University volleyball team fell in four sets on the road to East Texas Baptist University Tigers in the final match in American Southwest Conference play on Tuesday evening.
With the loss, the Blazers drop to 8-20 overall and 3-11 in conference play. Belhaven battled in all four sets, but ultimately fell by scores of 25-18,
25-21, 25-18, 25-17.
ETBU came out of the gate firing on all cylinders to take a quick 15-7 lead in the opening set. The Blazers could not gain the momentum and would eventually fall 25-18 in the first set.
The Green and Gold entered the second set looking for revenge. The Blazers took the 14-9 lead after five errors and an ace. The Blazers held on to the lead for the rest of the second set and never let the Tigers gain the advantage in the set. Belhaven took the second set 25-21 to even the match at 1-1.
The Blazers jumped out to a quick 4-1 advantage in the third set, before the Tigers earned the next seven points to make the score 8-4. Belhaven kept it close for the majority of the set, but ETBU kept their foot on the gas pedal late in the set to earn a 25-18 set victory and take the 2-1 lead in the match.
The Tigers dominated for most of the fourth set, as the Blazers tried to rally late, but could not overcome the deficit. ETBU went on to win the set by a final score 25-17 and took the match 3-1.
Vivien Marquez led the Blazers with 12 kills and three aces. Senior
Evelyn Parker and
Chelsea Creighton each tallied seven kills in the contest.
Megan Nobles and
Hallie Goodwin finished the night with two aces apiece.
Evelyn Parker,
Callista Moore, and
Izabella Erickson each posted a block in the match.
Sydney McEachern led the defense for the Blazers with 22 digs, while
Grace Laukhuf added 12 assists.
The Blazers will return to the court on Saturday for a doubleheader against Hendrix College and Rhodes College. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. with the second match to follow.
