Blazers Comeback Effort Falls Short Against Cru

Jackson, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers men's soccer team played host to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Thursday, October 17. Despite a tremendous come-from-behind effort by the Blazers, the Cru prevailed by a final of 3-2.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie as the Cru outshot the Blazers 5-2 in the half, but the tie was broken quickly in the second half as the Cru scored their first goal in the 48th minute of the match as Patrick Roach found the back of the net with an assist from Brody Conley giving the Cru a 1-0 lead. The Cru extended the lead as Tyler Childs took a corner kick and converted it for an Olympic goal making the lead 2-0.

The Blazers wasted little time cutting into the lead as junior midfielder Ian Requilman beat the Cru goalkeeper with an assist from junior midfielder James Dempsey in the 55th minute making the score 2-1.

The Cru once again extended the lead to two goals in the 67th minute as Brody Conley squeezed one past Blazers freshman goalkeeper Max Rudolph; however, the Blazers once again cut the lead to one as senior forward Max Maguire edged a goal past the Cru goalkeeper with Dempsey getting his second assist of the match in the 77th minute. Despite a heavy, focused attack by the Blazers in the late minutes of the match, an equalizing goal would not be found giving the Cru the 3-2 victory.

The Blazers totalled seven shots throughout the match with five on goal while Rudolph made nine saves facing 18 shots with 12 on goal.

The Blazers fall to 9-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in American Southwest Play. The Blazers return to action on Saturday, October 19, for Senior Day in their final regular season home game hosting the Concordia University Tornadoes. The action is set to kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
