RICHARDSON, Texas – The Belhaven University volleyball fell twice in straight sets to the University of Texas at Dallas Comets and the Centenary College Ladies. With the loss, the Blazers fall to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
In the opening set with UTD, the Blazers and Comets drew even at 11-11, but could not push out in front, as UTD took the 25-17 set victory and take a1-0 lead in the match. Despite a strong start in set two, the Comets held tight to the lead to close the second set going on a 12-3 run and take the 25-14 set victory and have a 2-0 advantage in the match. The Blazers knew they needed to produce some points, but the Comets came out of the gate on fire and took the 25-9 set victory to sweep the Blazers 3-0.
Elaina Smith led the Blazers with nine kills, while
Vivien Marquez and
Faith Stone tallied five kills in the contest.
Callista Moore and
Chelsea Creighton led the defensive side of the ball with two blocks.
Grace Laukhuf posted 13 assists and five digs in the match and
Grace Eidson was close behind her with 11 assists.
Sydney McEachern led the Green and Gold with 13 digs in the match.
In the second match of the afternoon the Blazers squared off against the Centenary College Ladies in a natural site match. The Ladies controlled the match from start to finish and never let the Blazers find any rhythm in all three set of match play. The Blazers and Ladies went back and forth for half of the opening set as the score was knotted up at 14-14 going into the ladder part of the first set. Centenary caught an offensive spark as the Blazers could not regain the momentum falling 25-20 in the opening set. The Blazers came out of the first set looking for revenge as the Green and Gold led for the majority of the set until the score halted at 19-19. The Ladies would regroup and go on a 6-2 run to close out the second set with a 25-21 set victory and a 2-0 match lead. Centenary would control the third set as the Blazers only lead was a kill by
Faith Stone to open the third set. The ladies would go on and claim the 25-15 set victory to sweep the Blazers 3-0 in a non-conference matchup.
Elaina Smith posted seven kills and two blocks in the contest, while
Callista Moore tallied six kills, two blocks and had six digs in the loss.
Grace Laukhuf earned 14 assists and three aces in the match.
The Blazers will return to the court tomorrow in a doubleheader with LeTourneau University and Texas Lutheran University. LeTourneau will host the doubleheader in Longview, Texas. First tip is set for 11:00 a.m. and then 1:00 p.m.
