JACKSON, Miss.– The Belhaven University women's basketball team fell late to the University of Texas at Tyler Patriots by a final score 58-53 Saturday afternoon inside Rugg Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – The Blazers jumped out to a 6-2 run in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The Patriots answered with six points of their own to take an 8-6 lead midway through the first half.
Alexis Caldwell evened the score up at 8 at the 5:00 mark of the first frame. UTT scored three consecutive baskets before the Blazers could make a bucket.
Erika Smith's made a three-pointer with 18 seconds left in the first quarter to make the score 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter– The Green and Gold went on a 7-0 run to begin the second quarter, making the score 21-11 at the 7:24 mark. The Blazers and Patriots exchanged baskets for next five minutes, but the Patriots held on to the 10-point advantage. Aaliyaha Thornton made free throws at the 1:28 mark to end the first half with UTT gaining holding on to the 29-21 lead.
Third Quarter – In the opening minute of the third quarter, the Patriots extended their lead 11, which was the largest of the game. After a few possessions, both teams traded buckets, until
DeQuandra Lyles made a three-pointer cutting the lead to 41-39 with 3:13 remaining in the third quarter. The Blazers outscored the Patriots 23-18 during the contest, but UTT remained ahead of the Belhaven 47-44 at the end of the third frame.
Fourth Quarter– UTT pushed their lead to 10 points in the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter making the score 54-44. Over the next four minutes of action, neither team could find a bucket, until Aaliyaha Thornton drained a shot from behind the arc, making the score 54-47 at the 2:44 mark. The Blazers cut the lead to three points making it a one-possession game with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. UTT held on to earn the 58-53 victory over the Blazers.
