Brooks Lifts Blazers Past Ozarks to Earn 61-59 Victory

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven University women's basketball team drilled a buzzer beater at the end of regulation to take the 61-59 victory over the University of the Ozarks on Thursday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Quarter – The Blazers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. Both teams exchanged shots for the next few possessions to even the score up at 8 at the 3:24 mark. The Green and Gold closed out the first quarter going on a 6-1 run to make the score 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Second Quarter - In the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Blazers pushed their lead to nine points, which was the largest lead of the game. The Eagles began to soar and cut the lead to three points to bring the score to 22-19 with 3:54 left until the halftime break. For the remainder of the quarter, Belhaven remained on top by a score of 28-25 heading into intermission.
 
Third Quarter – Within a minute of the third quarter, the Ozarks tied the ballgame up at 30. After a jumper from Lauren Brooks and another one from AaLiyaha Thornton, the Blazers regained a three-point lead to make the score 34-31. There were multiple lead changes to close of the rest of the third quarter, but Belhaven held on to the three-point advantage, making the score 45-42 going into the final frame.
 
Fourth QuarterPeyton Papenburg opened the fourth quarter with a steal and a made layup for the five-point advantage, bringing the score to 47-42. After a made three-pointer by Brittany Ford, the Eagles answered with a three-point of their own to tie the match up at 50. Belhaven and the Ozarks exchanged buckets, but Peyton Papenburg put the Green and Gold ahead 58-54 with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. The Eagles made a quick three-pointer to cut the lead to 58-57. Hailey Ostrander tied the game up at 59 after she made two free throws with 16 seconds remaining in regulation. AaLiyaha Thornton then drilled the game-winner with .7 seconds remaining to give Belhaven the 61-59 win over the University of the Ozarks.
