McEachern Sets Career Record in Loss to Texas Lutheran

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University football dropped a 23-0 decision to Texas Lutheran University Saturday night inside the Belhaven Bowl Stadium to begin American Southwest Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

- The Bulldogs executed a successful six play, 56 yard drive that was capped off with a 25 yard rushing touchdown from running back Chris Monroe to give TLU the quick 7-0 lead. 

- With 4:21 remaining in the first quarter, Texas Lutheran's DaKwa Davis sacked Ben Owens for a safety, giving the Bulldogs a 9-0 advantage.

- The Blazers' defense looked dominant, holding the Bulldogs offense to zero points for the remainder of the half. The Blazers offense had the opportunity to score before the half but were unsuccessful. TLU led Belhaven 9-0 at the break.

- After a successful third quarter showing by the Belhaven defense, TLU was able to score on a 10 yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Jarvis Brooks, against a worn down Blazer defense.

- The touchdown put the Bulldogs up 16-0 headed into the fourth quarter.

- Trailing 16-0 late into the fourth quarter, Belhaven's offense stalled, giving the ball back to the Bulldog offense with under ten minutes left in regulation. 

- The Bulldogs went on a nine play 83-yard drive which was capped off with a 29-yard rushing touchdown from Austin Matthews to seal the victory 23-0 over the Blazers.

KEY STATISTICS 

- Quarterback Hunter McEachern led the Blazers with 150 yards passing, completing 15-of-31 passing attempts. 

- McEachern set a Belhaven school record for career passing yards on the night, bringing his career total to 6,705 yards, passing the old record set by Samuel Husband (6,704 career passing yards).

- Running back Brad Foley led the rushing attack with 10 rushed for 77 yards on the ground.   

- Zach Shemmel averaged 39.0 yards per punt with a longest of 57 yards on the night.

- Wide Receiver Joey Walden led all Belhaven receivers with four receptions and 61 yards.

- Denarrius Noel led the defensive side with nine total tackles including six solo tackles, three assists, and 1.0 tackle for loss. 

- In the secondary, Maurice Stewart had two tackles, including an interception in the end zone, his first of the season.

Belhaven will have play host to East Texas Baptist University Tigers next Saturday, September 22nd in the Belhaven Bowl Stadium for Family Weekend. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
