Blazers Hit Four Home Runs in Series Finale Rout at McMurry

ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven University softball team split their doubleheader at McMurry in the final two games of the series on Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Game one

- Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings of play with McMurry recording just one hit.

- McMurry broke through in the bottom of the third with four runs on four hits.

- The War Hawks loaded up the bases with no outs and then did their damage to claim a 4-0 lead.

- Belhaven was still searching for their first hit into fourth inning. Cassidy Blount collected the first hit for the Blazers in the inning on an infield single.

- Marlee Blackwell singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. Whitney Jemison then registered an RBI single which scored Blount from second to slice into the lead at 4-1.

- BU then added another run after Brianna Dollar ripped an RBI single out to left field which brought home Blackwell to make it a 4-2 game.

- McMurry extended its lead out to 6-2 after a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.

- The Blazers put two runners on with one out in the top of the sixth, but the Green and Gold were unable to bring anyone home.

- Belhaven showed great resilience in the seventh inning.

-  With the bases loaded with one out, Makayla Reed connected on a two-RBI single down the left field line, which scored both Brittany Chetta and Kaitlyn Blubaugh to make it a 6-4 ball game.

- Cassidy Blount drew a walk to load up the bases for Marlee Blackwell.

-  Meg Garton scored from third to make it 6-5 after Blackwell lined out to left.

- With the Blazers down to their final out, Whitney Jemison came up huge with a clutch RBI single to tie up the ball game at 6-6.

- However, McMurry would walk it off in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single up the middle to win the game 7-6.

 

Game two

- In the series finale, the Blazers' bats took out all of their frustration from the previous two games with a dominating performance.

- The Blazers got off to an excellent start and made good use of the long ball with a couple of home runs in the top of the first.

- Makayla Reed smashed a two-run home run and then Marlee Blackwell ripped a solo shot to left as the Blazers took a 3-0 advantage.

- Danielle Darmohray continued the home run party with a shot to left field in the top of the second as BU pushed ahead 4-0.

- Meg Garton converted on an RBI single out to right field to make it 5-0.

- Makayla Reed then hit her second home run of the game with a three-run bomb off the scoreboard in centerfield for an 8-0 advantage.

- The Green and Gold would continue to find ways to score by adding three more runs to take a commanding 11-0 lead as they completely controlled the game.

- The Blazers gave up just one run in the contest in the bottom of the fourth and held the War Hawks to just four hits.

KEY STATISTICS

Game one

- Cassidy Blount and Whitney Jemison each recorded two hits apiece. Jemison finished with two RBI.

- Makayla Reed tallied two RBI with a 1-3 performance from the plate.

- Belhaven finished the contest with eight hits.

- Jordan Herring and Jordan Self each saw action in game one. Herring fell to 7-1 inside the circle after tossing 4.1 innings of action. She struck out three batters in the loss.

- Self pitched two full innings in relief, before Herring took over again in the seventh.

 

Game two

- Jordan Herring pitched four innings and registered the win inside the circle. Herring improves to 8-1 on the season.

- Lauren Feagin pitched one full inning in relief to close out the victory.

- Makayla Reed finished the afternoon with a 3-3 performance from the plate with two home runs, a double, and five total RBI.

- Marlee Blackwell and Danielle Darmohray each recorded a home run apiece. Darmohray tallied two RBI each.

- Meg Garton placed a 2-4 performance at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

- Whitney Jemison finished with a strong 2-3 outing with a run scored, while Marissa Rice tallied a single and a double.

- Kaitlyn Blubaugh also recorded a hit in the game as Belhaven totaled 13 hits as a team.
