Blazers Sweep Hardin-Simmons; Win Ninth Straight

ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven University softball team cruised to a 10-1 victory on Saturday afternoon in Abilene against Hardin-Simmons in American Southwest Conference play.

With the victory, the Blazers sweep the series and improve to 11-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Blazers got off to another fantastic start in the top of the first when Makayla Reed doubled to centerfield, which scored Kaitlyn Blubaugh for a 1-0 advantage.

- With two base runners on, Cassidy Blount crushed a three-run home run to propel the Blazers ahead for a 4-0 lead.

- In the bottom of the first, Hardin-Simmons had two runners on second and third with just out, but the Blazer defense held them to just one run.

- Later on in the contest, the Green and Gold caught fire again offensively.

- Reed produced another big hit to collect a two-RBI single which brought home Blubaugh and Brittany Chetta to extend the Blazers' lead out to 6-1.

- An infield single from Marlee Blackwell pushed the lead up to 7-1.

- In the fifth, Belhaven had a couple of more base runners after Cassidy Comstock and Toni Wilson connected on base hits.

- The damage continued for the Blazers with both Brianna Dollar and Meg Garton tacking on back-to-back singles, scoring both Comstock and Wilson as the Blazers jumped ahead 9-1.

- With the bases loaded, Brianna Dollar crossed the plate off of a wild pitch to score the final run of the contest.

- Jordan Herring retired the side in the bottom of the fifth to end the game due to a mercy rule.

KEY STATISTICS

- The Blazers notched 16 hits in total as a team

- Makayla Reed and Cassidy Blount each tabbed two hits apiece and collected three RBI.

- Meg Garton, Kaitlyn Blubaugh, and Marlee Blackwell both recorded two hits each.

- Blubaugh and Reed both crossed the plate twice in the victory.

- Jordan Herring improved to 5-0 in the circle after tossing five full innings of work. Herring struck out two batters and gave up just total hits in her outing.

UP NEXT

Belhaven will face Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. on Monday for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
