Blazers fall in two games Friday night

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University baseball team fell in back to back games Friday night versus Berry College and Fontbonne University in Jackson, Miss. Berry beat Belhaven 9-3 in game one of the Blazers doubleheader, while Fontbonne took game two by a final score of 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Game one

- Berry struck first in the first inning as Spence Johns singled to right centerfield, scoring Will Deems to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

- In the third inning, a Blazer throwing error allowed two more runs to cross over the plate as Casey Whitaker and Spence Johns each scored for the Vikings, stretching Berry's lead to 3-0. The Vikings added one more run in the same inning to give Berry a 4-0 lead.

- The Blazers scored for the first time in the fifth inning with a Colton Fontana single to center field scored both Hunter Harsh and Kreg Garner. Fontanas single cut the Viking lead to 4-2

- Yet, in the top half of the sixth inning, Berrys Spence Johns would single to right centerfield, scoring one run off of the hit. Berry added three more runs in the sixth inning as the Vikings continued to add to their lead, 8-2.

- Austin Brooks crossed the plate for Berry once again in the top half of the ninth inning off of a Will Deems single, pushing the lead to 9-2.

- Belhaven pushed across one more run in the bottom of the ninth when Kreg Garner scored from third base on a throwing error. The score trimmed the lead to 9-3. Unfortunately, the Blazers could not mount a comeback as they fell by a final score of 9-3. 

- Game two

- The Griffins got on the board first in the fourth inning after Matt Tossick reached on a throwing error, scoring Ryan Schocker to give Fontbonne the 1-0 lead.

- In the sixth inning, Michael Puckett Jr. singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Jackson Penrod to extend the Griffins lead to 2-0.

- In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Blazers designated hitter, Will Costinett, doubled to right center field allowing Belhaven right fielder Gasper D'Anna to score all the way from first base. 

- Fontbonne continued to add to their lead in the top half of the seventh inning when a Jackson Penrod single, allowed Deiydon Rushing to cross the plate to give the Griffins the 3-1 advantage.

- The Blazers, unfortunately, could not add any more runs, as the green and gold ultimately fell by a final score of 3-1 in game two of tonight's doubleheader.

KEY STATISTICS

- Game one

- Kreg Garner finished 2-3 at the plate, with two runs scored, and one walk to lead the Belhaven offense.

- Colton Fontana ended the game 1-3 at the plate while driving in two runs

- Dillon Carrell collected one hit while Hunter Harsh finished with a run scored.

- David Hall (1-1) received his second start of the season going 5.0 innings and giving up seven hits, four runs, one earned run, two walks, while striking out four batters,

- The Blazers collected a total of four hits as a team.

- Game two

- Tucker Calhoun led all Blazer hitters with two hits tonight. Calhoun finished 2-4 at the plate.

- Gasper D'Anna and Will Costinett each finished 1-4 at the plate. Costinett had the only RBI on the night while D'Anna scored the only run for the green and gold.

- Both Colton Fontana and Kreg Garner finished 1-3 tonight, respectively. Garner drew one walk in the contest.

- Tyler Wolfe (0-2) drew his second start of the season. Wolfe pitched 7.0 innings while giving up seven hits, three runs, two of which were earned, one walk, and striking out four Griffin batters.

- As a team, the Blazers finished with six total hits.

UP NEXT

Belhaven will host LaGrange (5-4) on Saturday in a single game series between the Blazers and the Panthers. The Panthers are coming off of a 7-5 loss to Millsaps College on Friday night. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
