Belhaven defeats Centenary College in dramatic fashion

SHREVEPORT, La. - After a rusty game one in which the Blazers fell 10-0 to the Centenary College Gents (5-1), the 2018 Belhaven Blazers (1-1) pulled off a crazy victory over Centenary College in game two of tonight's double header, 7-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- In the first inning, second baseman Evan Moore would double to right center scoring Reed, giving the Blazers to lead 1-0.

- A Gasper D'Anna single to right field would score Evan Moore, extending the first inning lead to 2-0.

- In the bottom half of the first inning, Centenary Colleges Cole Lastovica would score on an error, cutting the score to 2-1.

- In the same inning, the Gents Ian Graham would single to left field, scoring Cody Crowder and tying the score up at 2-2.  

- In the third, Kreg Garner would double to right center field, scoring both Gasper D'Anna and Evan Moore to give the Blazers the lead once again 4-2.

- An Evan Moore single to second base would allow Colton Fontana to cross home plate to extend the Green and Golds lead to 5-2.

- Gasper D'Anna would once again single to right field, scoring Cale Hollingsworth to push the Blazer score to 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning.

- In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Centenary Colleges Cody Crowder would single to left field, scoring both Peyton Cormane and Cole Lavergne on the hit to give CC two runs and cut the Blazer lead to 6-4.

- CC's Chris Haggard would fly into a double play which allowed Cameron Guin to score from third base for the gentleman. The score would bring the Gents within one run, 6-5.

- Chris Zapata would ground into double play, but the double play would once again allow the Gentleman to cross a run over the plate, this time tying the ball game up at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

- With the score all knotted up at 6-6 in the top half of the eighth inning, preseason ASC watch list nominee and last years team leader in home runs, Will Costinett, would once again send a pitch over the left-center field fence and put his team back up on top, 7-6. Costinetts home run was his first of the season.

- Up 7-6, Closer Chase Birch would get in an early bind, in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Gentleman would load the bases with no outs. Yet, after two straight strikeouts and a soft hit back to Birch on the mound, the Blazers would get out of the inning with no damage, giving Belhaven the 7-6 victory.

KEY STATISTICS

- Gasper D'Anna and Evan Moore each led the team with 3 hits in game two tonight. Moore would finish 3-4 and a team-high two runs scored, while D'Anna finished 3-5 in the game.

- D'Anna, Moore, and Kreg Garner would lead the team with two RBI's each, respectively. 

- On the mound for the Blazers, David Hall would get the nod for game two. Hall ended his night with 3.2 IP, five hits allowed, four runs, two of which were earned, four base on balls, and three strikeouts.

- Austin Douglas (1-0) would pick up the win in relief for the Blazers. Douglas went 3.0 IP, allowing only one hit and striking out three batters. Chase Birch would pick up the save. 

- As a team, the Blazers finished with 11 hits and batted .289

UP NEXT

Belhaven will continue their season on the road this Tuesday as the Blazers will head to Montgomery, Alabama to take on Huntingdon College in a single game series. First pitch is set to be thrown at 3:00 p.m.
