BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Belhaven University women's basketball team picked up a 64-52 victory against the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon in ASC play.
 
With the win, Belhaven improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in American Southwest Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Belhaven opened the game going on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 5-0 early in the first quarter.

- The Blazers offense kept clicking to extend their lead to 11-5 at the midpoint of the first period.

- Over the next few possessions, the Lady Jackets narrowed the lead to three points to make the score 13-10 with 2:34 left in the first quarter.

- The Green and Gold finished the quarter strong to take the 18-12 advantage going into the second quarter.

- Both teams could not find a bucket in the first three and half minutes of action, until a made layup by HPU to make the score 18-14.

- Howard Payne closed the gap to 20-19 with 3:20 remaining in the second frame. The Blazers held onto the 25-21 lead going into intermission.

- Brittany Ford opened the scoring for Belhaven with a made three-pointer to extend the lead to 28-21.

- Alexis Caldwell scored the next six points for the Green and Gold to give Belhaven the largest lead of the game, making the score 34-24.

- After a made bucket by Peyton Papenburg and made free throws from Alexis Caldwell, the Blazers extended their lead to 38-24 halfway through the third quarter.

- Howard Payne gained the momentum, after a couple of turnovers by the Blazers to bring the score to 46-40 at the end of the third quarter.

- Belhaven took charge to open the final frame going on a 10-0 run with 6:40 remaining in regulation to make the score 56-40.

- For the next four minutes of action, Belhaven and Howard Payne exchanged buckets to bring the score to 59-44 with 2:46 left in the fourth quarter.

- Belhaven held on for the remaining of the game to secure the 64-52 victory over Howard Payne.

KEY STATISTICS

- Alexis Caldwell, AaLiyaha Thornton, and Peyton Papenburg scored double digits in the win over HPU.

- Caldwell led the Blazers with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and shot 60 percent from the charity stripe.

- Thornton posted 13 points, four rebounds, four assists, and shot 50 percent from behind the arc. Additionally, she shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line.

- Papenburg racked up 11 points and shot 50 percent from the floor.

- Brittany Ford tallied eight points, while Lauren Brooks added seven points in the contest.

- As a team, the Blazers finished the game 46 percent from behind the three-point line and 71 percent from the free throw line. Additionally, the Green and Gold had 54 points in the paint and nine points from the bench.
