Blazers Fall to No. 8 Hardin-Simmons on Homecoming, Senior Day

JACKSON, Miss - The Belhaven University football team suffered a 61-13 loss to the #8 Hardin-Simmons Cowboys Saturday afternoon on Homecoming and Senior Day.

With the loss, the Blazers slipped to 1-8 overall and 1-7 in ASC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Hardin-Simmons opened up the game with an opening drive of six-plays for 91-yards, and capping off the drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Ty Hooper to Bryson Hammonds.

- The Blazers defense held its own for the remaining ten minutes of the first quarter, but the Cowboys struck with back to back touchdowns from Ty Hooper to Kevi Evans with passes of 29 and 10-yards in a matter of 25-seconds.

- The two touchdowns put the Cowboys up 21-0 with 1:27 remaining in the first quarter.

- Later in the second quarter, Reese Childress punched one in from three yards out to put HSU on top 28-0 with 9:58 in the second quarter.

- Five minutes later, a sack fumble to Hunter McEachern, resulted in a safety, giving the Cowboys two points to extend its lead to 30-0.

- Kavan Johnson of HSU capped off a 6-play, 50-yard drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown to go ahead 37-0.

- With four-seconds until the break, Belhaven's running back, Brad Foley caught a 2-yard screen out of the backfield and pushed it in for six to put Belhaven on the board. After Ryan Lindsey PAT Belhaven trailed 37-7.

- Hardin-Simmons came out in the second half and scored on there first few possessions with touchdown rushed of 62-yards and 6-yards to go ahead 51-7.

- A ten-play, 80-yard drive was capped of by a 1-yard rushing touchdown from running back Gabriel Wilson to cut the leas down to 51-13 with 1:54 left in the third quarter.

- Hardin-Simmons piled on 10 more points in the contest, and held Belhaven scoreless for the remainder of the game, winning by a final score of 61-13.

KEY STATISTICS

- Hunter McEachern completed 9-19 passes for 94 yards through the air and one touchdown of 2-yards to Brad Foley.

- McEachern leading receiver for the contest was LaMarcus Caradine who had two catches for 33 yards.

- Brad Foley led the rushing attack with 18 rushing attempts for 49 yards. Additionally, he had two catches for six yards and one receiving touchdown.

- On the defensive side of the ball, Denarrius Noel led the way with 11 total tackles, 10 solo, and two assisted. He also had 0.5 sacks, and 1.5 tackles for loss.

- Justin Percy added six tackles including a forced fumble, while Garrett Osborne had an interception in the game. Belhaven had 3.0 sacks and 8.0 tackles for loss as a team.

Belhaven will hit the road next Saturday, November 10th, to take on ASC opponent, Sul Ross State at 6:00 p.m. for the Blazers final game of the season.
