Blazers Shutout at Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas- The Belhaven University football team dropped their first game of the 2017 season on Saturday evening in a 37-0 loss at Texas Lutheran in American Southwest Conference play.

With the loss, Belhaven falls to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in ASC play.

The Blazers started the contest off on a positive note on their opening drive. After converting  a couple of first downs, Hunter McEachern connected with Kyky Austin for a 51-yard completion down to the TLU 18-yard line. Octavious Arrington would rush the ball all the way to the Bulldogs' two yard line, but multiple penalties and a sack stalled the drive for the Green and Gold.

Texas Lutheran scored on its first possession and led 7-0 after the first quarter. The Bulldogs would add another touchdown in the second quarter before kicking a field goal right before halftime to lead 17-0.

In the second half, Texas Lutheran scored on a two-play 62-yard drive to extend their lead to 24-0. Later on in the third quarter, the Bulldogs struck again quickly on a short three-play 53-yard drive to lead 31-0.

The Bulldogs would add another score in the fourth quarter, and would fail on the PAT.

Belhaven had opportunities to get on the board in the second half with multiple drives well inside TLU territory, but turnovers, incompletions, and penalties would keep them outside of the endzone on Saturday.

The Blazers were unable to stop the ground attack of Texas Lutheran as they marched for 311 yards throughout the game.

TLU also had 216 passing yards to compile over 500 yards of total offense.

McEachern finished the evening 40-69 for 310 yards with three interceptions.

Belhaven was limited to only 42 rushing yards, as Marquis Hedge led the way with 32.

Kyky Austin posted a team-high 64 receiving yards, and Jacob McNeill and Nolan Satcher each tallied seven receptions for 44 and 43 receiving yards respectively.

Defensively, Keith Marshall finished with 10 tackles, six of which were solo. David Lewis, Alvin McCaskey, and Justin Percy all finished with seven tackles apiece. Maurice Stewart, who tabbed five tackles, collected a 31-yard interception return in the second half.

Belhaven will return to the gridiron next Saturday with a matchup against ASC foe East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas at 7 p.m.
