MARSHALL, Texas – The Belhaven University football team dropped their second loss of the season on Saturday evening in a 79-40 loss at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall Texas in American Southwest Conference play.
Hunter McEachern tied his own school record with six touchdown passes.
With the loss, Belhaven falls to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Blazers started out on the right track when Sophomore Quarterback
Hunter McEachern connected with sophomore wide receiver
LaMarcus Caradine on a 39–yard touchdown pass on the opening drive of the game.
East Texas Baptist University scored on their first possession to tie the ball game at 7-7 after Dru Smith ran for a 23-yard score. The Tigers would score two more touchdowns in the first quarter to bring the score to 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blazers would quickly respond in the second quarter when
Hunter McEachern hit
LaMarcus Caradine in stride for the 34-yard score. The following possession
Demetrius Brokenberry hit running back Dominic Haggerty to force the fumble and the Blazers would recover. The next series
Hunter McEachern found
Nolan Satcher for the 8-yard score (PAT failed).
The Tigers would score two more touchdowns to bring the score to 20-34. With only 2:19 left in the first half,
Hunter McEachern connected with Jacob McNeil for a 31-yard score; the Blazers would go for a 2-point conversion but failed to cross the goal line to go into halftime with the score of 34-26.
The Tigers would score in 50 seconds to extend their lead to 41-26. Eight minutes later, the Tigers would score again after quarterback Dru Smith found Cameron Goodlett in the end zone for the touchdown that made the score 48-26.
The next series the Blazers would score after
Hunter McEachern connected with
Quan Jones 17 yards out. The Blazers would go for the two-point conversion but would come up short, to close the gap to 32-48.
The Tigers would score 24 unanswered points to extend their lead to 72-32. With just 10: 36 left in the game,
Hunter McEachern threw a 13-yard bullet to
LaMarcus Caradine the Blazers would go for the two-point conversion and would make it after
Hunter McEachern found Jacob McNeil in the end zone.
The Tigers would score one more time to bring the final score to 79-40.
Offensively, McEachern finished the game with completions on 33 of his 51 passes for 482 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. McEachern threw the ball to 13 different receivers in the game.
Brad Foley finished the game with 76 rushing yards, while Jacob McNeil finished the evening with 184 yards and one touchdown. Also,
LaMarcus Caradine finished the evening with 102 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Latevinian Glass led the defense with 10 total tackles, 4 solo, and 6 assists. Also,
Seth Gatson posted eight total tackles 6 solo and 2 assists.
ETBU had 632 yards of total offense, while the Blazers had 600 yards of total offense.
The Belhaven Blazers will return to the gridiron to face off against Howard Payne University Yellowjackets next Saturday, September 30
th for Family Weekend. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm
