LONGVIEW, Texas - For the third straight week, the Belhaven baseball team rallies to come-from-behind and win a ballgame in game two of a doubleheader, but this time, they accomplish the feat on the road, defeating LeTourneau 16-4 in game one and completing the comeback 8-6 in 10 innings on Friday night from Conrad-Vernon Field.
Down 6-1 going into the eighth in game two of the twinbill, the Blazers, down to their final six outs, were able to score five runs in the final two innings of regulation to tie the game at six.
In the eighth, BU put three runs on the board to make it a 6-4 contest. After two groundouts were recorded,
Stephen Sexton drew a walk. After a pitching change,
Kreg Garner pushed Sexton to third base with a base knock down the right field line. The next batter,
Gabe Veith, scorched a base hit up the middle to score Sexton.
After a wild pitch put Garner at third and Veith at second,
Julyan Urena brought them both home on a two-run RBI double, which cut the deficit to 6-4.
After a scoreless bottom of the eighth, the Green and Gold put together another rally in the top of the ninth. With one out,
Ryan Wesson made it to first on an errant throw by the LeTourneau shortstop.
Two batters later, with two outs in the inning, Sexton, on the seventh pitch of the at-bat, laced a single to the outfield to keep the game alive. The senior battled from an 0-2 count to run it full before the base knock.
Garner would then hit a groundball to the pitcher, but the ball was thrown high over the first baseman's head and rolled down the right field line in foul territory. The three-base error, which would have ended the contest, scored Wesson and Sexton on the play and that tied the game up at six runs.
During Veith's at bat, a wild pitch was thrown, and Garner was trying to score the go-ahead run on the play. However, he was tagged out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Gonzalo Sosa led off the inning with a walk. The next batter, Jacob Simmons, grounded a ball down the first base line. Ruled a fair ball, the only play was at the first base bag, and that is where Sexton placed his foot on the bag to complete the putout.
However, everybody at the game except for Sosa knew the ball was fair, because he was jogging back to first thinking that the ball was foul. Sexton immediately threw to Urena to catch the runner for the second out.
After a strikeout to end the ninth, the momentum that was in favor of the YellowJackets earlier in the game, shifted over to the Blazers as the contest went into extra innings.
Belhaven's (25-14, 12-10) 10th inning began with a Veith double to deep left center field. With
Colton Fontana pinch running at second, Urena pushed him to third with a base knock. After a pop-up and Urena moving to second, the go-ahead run was 90 feet away for
JG Miley.
On a 2-0 count, the Tupelo, Miss. native pounded a single to bring home both Fontana and Urena to give BU the 8-6 lead on the road.
In the bottom of the 10th,
Chase Birch (1-0) struck out the side to complete the doubleheader sweep for BU. In his relief efforts, the Kentwood, La. native tossed 2.2 shutout innings, allowing one walk while fanning five batters.
This is Belhaven's third straight week with an extra inning game. BU defeated then No. 10 UT Dallas in the series opener, 5-3, on a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th by
Will Costinett.
The next week, BU rallied from a near perfect game by the Ozarks to defeat the Eagles, 4-3, in 10 innings. Belhaven is 4-1 in extra inning affairs this season.
Garner and Urena each recorded three hits in the second game, with Veith earning two hits.
Landon Boyd, who earned a no decision in the contest in the start, went four innings, allowed six earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.
Along with Birch,
David Hall was stellar in a bullpen that was short-staffed. The freshman went 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and two walks while punching out two batters.
For LeTourneau (9-25, 1-19) Andrew Harlan took a tough no decision for the YellowJackets, firing 7.2 innings in his start, allowing two runs on three walks and hits each with nine strikeouts.
In game one, the Green and Gold got on the board out of the gate and did not look back.
Terrell Hodges started the game by reaching base on a hit-by-pitch. He would later score on a
Daniel Ammirati single.
Leading 1-0 heading into the second inning, the Blazers put up nine runs in the frame on four hits and sent 12 men to the plate.
With
Ty Dean at third base, Urena at second and Miley at first, Hodges recorded a base knock to score Dean and Urena to make it 3-0.
After a Wesson four-pitch walk to reload the bases, Ammirati, on four straight pitches, drew a bases loaded walk to score Miley.
Following a pitching change, Sexton brought two more home on a base hit, scoring Wesson and Hodges.
Leading 6-0, and after another four-pitch in the inning, drawn by Sexton, Dean's second at-bat in the inning would be a memorable one for the junior. The West, Miss. native smashed a ball over the left field wall for the grand slam.
In the third with a 10-3 lead, BU tacked on three more runs. Wesson brought home Miley and Hodges on a two-run base knock, and Bolton, who pinch ran for Wesson, scored the 13th run of the game via a Garner base knock.
Leading 13-3 going into the seventh, After
Drew Bellipanni doubled to lead off the inning, Miley smashed his first career home run with a two-run shot. Hodges would follow suit with a back-to-back job for his 10th dinger of the year to make it 16-3.
The 16 runs are the most in conference play this season for the Blazers, and the most since last season's 19-run outburst against UT Tyler last April.
Tanner Cable (4-2) recorded the win for the Blazers, tossing six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, walking four and striking out seven on 90 pitches.
The 2017 regular season concludes for the Blazers Saturday at LETU with the series finale. First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m. from Conrad-Vernon Field.
