LONGVIEW, Texas - The Belhaven baseball team earned its second consecutive sweep in conference play Saturday afternoon from Conrad-Vernon Field, defeating LeTourneau, 8-5, in six innings.
Going into the seventh inning, as the Blazers led off the inning on offense, a lightning strike appeared near the field, and caused a delay. With the rain coming through, as well as the lighting that the storms were producing, the game was called at the end of the sixth inning.
The Green and Gold (26-14, 14-10) got the bats going right out of the gate with a five-run first inning.
After
Terrell Hodges was hit by a pitch, the hit-and-run was on for
Daniel Ammirati, who laced a single up the middle to put Hodges at third with one out. Ammirati moved up to second base as the throw from the outfield was coming to the plate.
That base knock started a strand of six straight hits to score the five runs.
Stephen Sexton doubled home Hodges and Ammirati to get the Blazers on the board.
Kreg Garner kept the line moving with a base hit, moving Sexton to third, and
Ty Dean brought him home on a base hit of his own to put BU ahead 3-0.
After an error and a pass ball moved Garner and Dean to second and third, respectively,
Julyan Urena recorded an infield hit to keep the inning going. Garner scored on the play to make it 4-0.
While
Gabe Veith was at the plate, Urena was caught in a rundown from first to second. As he was tagged out at first base, Dean scored the fifth run of the inning.
After LeTourneau (9-26, 1-20) scored a run in the bottom of the first, BU tacked on a run in the second inning. Hodges reached base on a two-base error to start the inning. After moving to third, the Brandon, Miss. native scored on a passed ball to put BU up 6-1.
After LETU plated a run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 6-2, the Blazers added two runs in the fourth inning. With two outs in the frame, Hodges was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. He would advance to second on a stolen base and moved to third on an error.
Ryan Wesson brought the runner home, reaching base on a LeTourneau error. After Wesson moved to second on a wild pitch, Ammirati scored the eighth run of the contest with a single.
The YellowJackets would add three more runs, but the Blazers finished the game with the 8-5 win.
Hodges scored three runs in the ballgame, while Ammirati and Veith each recorded a multi-hit game.
Tyler Wolfe (5-2) tossed six innings before lightning halted the contest, allowed four earned runs on seven hits and striking out four.
The Blazers, with a bye week in the final weekend of ASC conference play next weekend, will now wait to learn if they have earned a berth in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Mideast Regional. Should the Blazers receive an NCCAA regional berth they would host the regional if they emerge as the highest regional seed. The regional is scheduled for the week of May 15.
