Softball to Close 2017 Season at Mary Hardin-Baylor

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University softball looks to end their 2017 season on a good note and extend their six-game winning streak, traveling to Belton, Texas this weekend for a three-game series versus Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Blazers take on the Crusaders in doubleheader action on Friday, beginning at 3 p.m., followed by the series finale Saturday at 12 p.m. 

Belhaven (16-19) has swept two consecutive ASC series, sweeping Howard Payne in Brownwood, Texas before taking three games from LeTourneau in Jackson. The Blazers have now won 14 of its past 22 games. 

The Green and Gold scored 12 runs on 12 hits to open the LeTourneau series with a win before using two straight shutout performances from Taylor Surrento and Valiree Blair to close out the series. Surrento surrendered just one hit in game two while Blair allowed just three hits in the finale. 

Surrento is now 4-0 with a 2.21 ERA in her last six appearances, while Blair is 2-0 with a save and a 0.98 ERA in her last three appearances. 

Freshman catcher Cassidy Blount went 5-for-10 at the plate versus LeTourneau, driving in four runs and scoring once. Blount is currently riding a six-game hitting streak.

Belhaven is now up to a .259 batting average as a team with a .349 on-base percentage. In the circle, the Blazers have tallied a 3.83 ERA and are allowing opponents to bat .277.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (25-12, 20-10 ASC) is also in the middle of a long winning streak, having won their past eight. The Crusaders have also won 15 of their past 18 games, but own just a 9-8 record at home this season. Most recently, UMHB earned a series sweep of Hardin-Simmons on the road last weekend. 

Cori Drake leads the Cru with a .422 batting average while Leah Brown has totaled nine home runs and 48 RBI. Eight UMHB players are hitting at least .300 this season, and the Crusaders have a .339 hitting percentage as a team. 

In the circle, Karen Tennis has a team-leading 2.81 ERA and a 12-4 record. The Cru have a 3.93 team ERA and opponents are batting .290. 

Belhaven swept Mary Hardin-Baylor last season in Jackson, defeating the Crusaders 1-0, 14-8 and 5-0.
