Blazers Wrap Up Non-Conference Schedule with 10-3 Win at Tougaloo

TOUGALOO, Miss. - The Belhaven baseball team concluded its non-conference schedule on Tuesday with a 10-3 road win at Tougaloo College.

After routing the Bulldogs 13-3 in their first matchup, the Blazers could not get anything on the scoreboard through the first three innings, stranding five runners on base.

In the fourth, the Blazers (23-14) finally got on the board. After a pop up started the inning, Gabe Veith and Tee Payne walked in back-to-back plate appearances. After a strikeout, Terrell Hodges reached base on an infield hit to load the bases with two outs.

The next batter, Ryan Wesson, earned a bases loaded walk to begin the merry-go-round on the base paths, scoring Veith.

After a wild pitch scored Payne, Stephen Sexton recorded a ground-rule double in his at-bat to bring home Hodges and Wesson. BU led 4-0 through three and a half.

Tougaloo (10-37) responded by scoring three runs in the frame to cut the deficit to 4-3, but that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get. The Green and Gold scored six unanswered runs: three each in the sixth and the seventh.

In the sixth, with the bases loaded, Sexton brought home Hodges and Wesson on his third double of the game to push the lead to 6-3.

Kreg Garner made it 7-3 on a sacrifice fly, scoring Daniel Ammirati

In the seventh, Hodges smashed a three-run homer to left field to put the Blazers in double digits. On his ninth homer, JG MIley and Veith scored on the play.

David Hall (6-3) pitched two innings of relief for Belhaven, allowed two hits and struck out one. Brick Pugh started for the Blazers, and the sophomore went 3.2 innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit and walk each and four strikeouts.

Hodges recorded a 4-for-6 day at the plate, missing a triple for the cycle, driving in three RBI and scored three times.

Wesson posted three hits and steals each, with an RBI and two runs scored.

Sexton had a three-hit game as well, all two-baggers for the senior, with a game-high four RBI.

The Blazers road trip continues on Friday with a three-game series against LeTourneau. Due to impending weather in the Longview area on Saturday, Friday's series opener will be a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m., and the series will conclude on Saturday for a 1 p.m. single game.
