Baseball Takes Series Sweep with 7-1 Win Over the Ozarks

JACKSON, Miss. - On Senior Day, the Belhaven baseball team completed the three-game sweep of the Ozarks with a 7-1 victory Friday afternoon in the home finale of the 2017 regular season.

Prior to first pitch, 10 seniors were honored: Daniel Ammirati, Landon Boyd, Shane Brown, Tanner Cable, Terrell Hodges, JG Miley, Tee Payne, Richard Richardson, Stephen Sexton and Gabe Veith.

The Green and Gold struck first in the bottom half of the first without the benefit of a hit. After Terrell Hodges was hit by a pitch to start the Blazers offense, he would move to third on two stolen bases. Stephen Sexton brought Hodges home on a sacrifice fly.

With the steal of second base, Hodges became the eighth Blazer with 50 career stolen bases in school history. The senior has 52 career steals headed into the final week of the regular season.

In the second, Belhaven put a five-spot in the inning to break it open early. After back-to-back singles by JG Miley and Gabe Veith, the duo moved up to second and third with a double steal. After a strikeout, Julyan Urena brought Miley home with an RBI base knock to put the lead to 2-0.

During Hodges' at-bat, after Urena took second base on a steal and Veith at third base, the Ozarks (9-22, 3-15) starting pitcher balked, and that allowed the runners to move up 90 feet. Veith scored on the play, and Urena moved over to third.

Later in the plate appearance, as Hodges drew a walk, the pitch got away from the catcher, which allowed Urena to score to make it 4-0 in favor of the Green and Gold.

After Hodges swiped his third base of the contest, Ryan Wesson brought him home on an RBI double.

After a groundout, Sexton brought in his second run of the game with a double of his own to score Wesson to push the lead to 6-0 after two innings.

BU (22-14, 11-10) added a run in the sixth inning. Wesson brought in Urena, who led off the inning with a base hit to make the lead 7-0.

The Eagles did break the shutout in the ninth to put the contest at 7-1, which would hold up for the Blazers sweep.

Landon Boyd (3-2) tossed seven shutout innings for BU, allowing seven hits, one walk and striking out three batters.

Wesson and Miley each recorded a multi-hit game, while Sexton totaled two RBI in the game.

Belhaven will next prepare for their final non-conference matchup of the season at Tougaloo. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
