JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven University softball used an eight-run sixth inning to pick up their fourth straight win, defeating LeTourneau University 12-5 Thursday afternoon at McLeod Field.
The Blazers (14-19) sent 13 batters to the box in the bottom of the sixth, totaling five hits and four walks. Trailing the YellowJackets 5-4 entering the sixth, the Green and Gold turned a one-run deficit into a a seven-run lead.
With runners on the corners and one down,
Toni Wilson hit a pinch-hit single to left field, scoring
Makayla Reed and evening the score at five apiece.
Crystal Kehtel followed with an RBI single to left, and
Brittany Chetta was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Three straight walks by
Mary Austin Barber,
Kaitlyn Blubaugh and
Hannah Holloway resulted in three more runs. Reed made her second plate appearance of the inning, singling to center field to bring home Barber. With two down, Blount singled up the middle to plate Blubaugh and Holloway and round the out Belhaven scoring in the sixth.
LeTourneau (13-22) threatened in the top of the seventh, putting runners on second and third, but Belhaven pitcher
Taylor Surrento retired two straight YellowJacket batters to secure the win.
The first five innings of this one was a back-and-forth affair, as the lead changed hands three times. The Blazers struck first, scoring twice in the top of the second. Blubaugh singled up the middle to plate Kehtel while a Reed single scored
Cassidy Comstock.
LeTourneau came back with one run in the third and two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. The lead went right back to Belhaven in the bottom half of the fourth, as Comstock scored from third on a YellowJacket fielding error, and Blubaugh crossed home plate on a Blount single.
In the top of the fifth, LeTourneau would retake the lead with two runs on three hits, including two doubles.
Surrento (8-10) earns the win in the circle, tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
The Blazers totaled 12 hits as a team, tying their season-high. Blount and Kehtel recorded three hits each while Reed tallied two hits.
The Green and Gold will look to keep the winning streak going on Friday as they wrap up the series versus LeTourneau with a doubleheader, beginning at 12 p.m. The Blazers will honor its eight seniors in a ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
