JACKSON, Miss. - Taylor Surrento and
Valiree Blair each tossed a complete-game shutout Friday afternoon as the Belhaven softball team twice defeated LeTourneau 4-0 on Senior Day to come away with a series sweep of the YellowJackets.
Surrento surrendered just one hit and two walks while striking out five batters. The senior had a no-hitter going through 4.2 innings, and picks up her ninth victory of the season with the win.
Belhaven was held without a hit through the first two innings, but in the third,
Cassidy Blount doubled to left center and
Crystal Kehtel singled to right to bring home Blount.
The Green and Gold padded their lead in the bottom of the fourth, as three Blazers crossed home plate.
Hannah Holloway scored
Mary Austin Barber with a single up the middle while
Makayla Reed hit a two-RBI single, plating Holloway and
Savannah Johnston.
The Blazers would fail to put a runner on base for the remainder of the game, but Surrento retired seven of the final eight batters she faced to complete the shutout win.
In game two, Blair allowed just four hits and zero walks while collecting three strikeouts. The junior earns her third win of the season and second in a row.
The Blazers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Holloway drew a bases-loaded walk to score
Brooke Laigast from third.
Savannah Lyon then singled to center to plate Barber, and Johnston crossed home on a Blount groundout.
Hanging on to a 3-0 advantage, Belhaven tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Megan Goss led off the inning with a single to left and was replaced on the base paths by
Kaitlyn Blubaugh. After a groundout and a flyout, Johnston came through with a two-out single to left, scoring Blubaugh from second.
Blair retired the LeTourneau side in order in the seventh to secure the shutout and series sweep.
Lyon was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate while Goss added two hits.
Belhaven has now six games in a row and improves to 16-19 on the season, finishing their home schedule with a 9-5 mark. LeTourneau falls to 13-24 for the year.
Up next, the Blazers travel to Belton, Texas on April 21 to close out the 2017 season with a three-game series at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
