JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven baseball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a 12-2 victory over Eureka on Wednesday afternoon.
BU started the scoring right out of the gate with a RBI groundout by
Stephen Sexton, scoring
JG Miley.Â
In the bottom of the second, the Blazers (8-6) plated four runs in the frame. After an out, the Green and Gold strung together three straight hits.
Kreg Garner and
Will Costinett smashed back-to-back two-baggers to make the lead 2-0.
After a Miley RBI groundout,
Reed Bolton scoring on a wild pitch and a
Ty Dean walk,
Terrell Hodges hit one of his two triples to bring Dean across the plate.
BU made it 6-0 in the bottom of the third as
Daniel Ammirati led off the inning with one of his two doubles, and later scored on a
Julyan Urena single.Â
In the fourth, Eureka (1-1) broke the shutout, but the Green and Gold got the run back on a RBI single by Sexton, scoring Hodges, who reached base on his second triple of the game.Â
The Red Devils added a run in the top of the fifth to make the contest 7-2 in favor of the Blazers, but BU got the run back again in the bottom half thanks to a Hodges sacrifice fly.Â
Belhaven would put the contest away in the sixth with four runs in the frame to a 12-2 lead. After the first three reached base, an Ammirati single, a Urena walk and a bunt single by
Tee Payne,
Gabe Veith delivered a pinch hit RBI single to score Ammirati.Â
After a strikeout, Miley popped up on the infield via the infield fly rule, but thanks to a dropped ball, Urena was able to score on the error.Â
During
Ryan Wesson's at bat, Payne scored the third run in the inning on a wild pitch. Later in the at bat, the sophomore delivered a triple into the alley to score Veith.Â
David Hall (3-1) recorded his second straight mid-week victory on the mound, going five innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and two walks. Of the 15 outs he recorded, 10 were via the groundball.Â
Rob Felton and
Tyler Ezell pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh, respectively, to seal the run-rule victory.
Every player in the starting nine recorded a hit in the win, and eight of the nine scored a run.
Reed Bolton and Ammirati each had three hits and scored twice in the contest.
Hodges finished with two hits in his four plate appearances with two RBIs and a run scored. Both his hits were triples, becoming the first Blazer to have a multi-triple game since Reagan Rutledge last accomplished this feat at Texas College on Mar. 11, 2015.Â
This is also the first time the Green and Gold totaled three triples since they did it twice during the 2015 season.Â
Wednesday's 17 hits against the Red Devils marks a season high in 2017, with seven of those hits extra bases.Â
The Green and Gold next prepare for the Marler Ford Classic this weekend, beginning on Friday afternoon against host Louisiana College at 4 p.m.
