PINEVILLE, La. - Stephen Sexton had a night to remember at Billy Allgood Field on the campus of Louisiana College, sending three baseballs over the wall for the Blazers' first three-home run game in over eight years, as the Green and Gold defeated the Louisiana College Wildcats, 11-3, Friday night in the opening game of the Marler Ford Classic.
Sexton's first dinger of the night came in the first inning with two outs. After a
Terrell Hodges walk to extend the inning, Sexton crushed his fourth bomb of the season over the left field wall for the early 2-0 lead.
The heavy lumber moved around the Blazers (9-6) lineup to
Daniel Ammirati in the fourth with a solo shot for his second career home run. The Queens, N.Y. native used a 10-pitch at bat to win the battle.
Leading 3-0 heading into the sixth, the Green and Gold put a five-spot in the top half of the frame to put the game out of reach, while batting around in the inning.
Hodges started the inning with a leadoff single, and Sexton drove him home with his second homer of the contest.
Later in the inning, both
Gabe Veith and
JG Miley reached base on two Wildcats errors. Veith's at-bat scored
Julyan Urena and Ammirati, while Miley brought home
Hunter Harsh, who pinch ran for Veith.
Louisiana College (9-4) would break the shutout in the bottom half of the sixth to make it 8-2 in favor of the Blazers.
In the seventh, BU added three more runs in the contest. Hodges began the frame advancing on a hit-by-pitch, and with a runner on, Sexton came strolling to the plate. On an 0-2 count, the Pontotoc, Miss. native went yard for a third time to put the Green and Gold in double figures.
The Blazers added another run in the inning on a
Kreg Garner double to bring home Ammirati.
LC would add a run in the seventh to make it 11-3, but the Green and Gold held off the home team in the final two innings.
Sexton's three home runs in a game are the most in a game for the Blazers since the 2010 season. That mark also ties an American Southwest Conference (ASC) record last set on Apr. 11, 2014 by Phillip Windham of East Texas Baptist.
His six RBIs is also the most in a game for the Blazers since the 2010 season.
Ammirati also recorded three hits and scored three times in the win.
Tanner Cable (2-1) went six innings, allowed two unearned runs, eight hits and three walks while striking out nine.
With the impending rains in the Pineville area on Saturday, the schedule at the Marler Ford Classic has moved up by three hours. Belhaven will play two, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday versus Eureka before wrapping up the weekend with LC at 1 p.m. from BIlly Allgood Field.
