PINEVILLE, La. - The Belhaven baseball team split their final two games in the Marler Ford Classic, hosted by Louisiana College on Saturday, defeating Eureka 10-0 before falling to the hosts Wildcats 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Billy Allgood Field.
In game one of the double dip, Belhaven brought the heavy lumber from Friday night into Saturday morning's game with the Red Devils (1-4).
Terrell Hodges opened the game with a solo home run, the fourth of the year for the senior.Â
In the second, third and fourth innings, the Green and Gold added two runs each to make the contest 7-0.Â
Belhaven's
Will Costinett and
Tee Payne scored a run each in the second inning off a muffed throw by Eureka during
Reed Bolton's at-bat.Â
In the third,
Daniel Ammirati hit his second home run of the weekend with a two-run shot, scoring
Stephen Sexton.Â
In the fourth, after
JG Miley tripled to score
Ryan Wesson, Hodges brought Miley home on an Eureka error.
In the fifth,
Julyan Urena brought the eighth run home for the Blazers, scoring after Wesson reached base on an error.Â
After a scoreless sixth, BU would put the game to a run-rule victory in the seventh, as Wesson and
Trip Benson recorded back-to-back RBI singles, scoring Ammirati and Payne, respectively.Â
Shane Brown (2-2), who had a perfect game bid go into the fifth inning, went the distance in the complete game shutout, allowing four hits, while fanning eight batters.Â
Game two of the doubleheader would be a different story for the Blazers (10-7), as Louisiana College (11-4) used two home runs to rattle starter
Tyler Wolfe, and the Wildcats bullpen shut down the Blazers offense that scored 33 runs in three games this week.Â
Hodges recorded the lone run in the third with his fifth home run of the year and his second of the day.Â
The Wildcats would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, and late scored the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fourth.Â
Wolfe (3-2) went 4.1 innings in the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four.Â
The Classic will conclude on Sunday with a doubleheader between the Wildcats and the Red Devils. Â
Belhaven will now take a couple of days for spring break before hitting the road to take on McMurry in Abilene, Texas as they resume ASC play. The three-game series begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. from Walt Driggers Field.Â
