TYLER, Texas - On a cloudy, windy and rainy Saturday afternoon, the Belhaven baseball team were swept by 13th ranked UT Tyler, falling to the Patriots 4-0 and 15-6 Saturday afternoon from Irwin Field.
In game one,
Shane Brown (1-2) tossed a complete game, but in a losing effort, going six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with four punchouts.
But the Green and Gold were unable to get the bats going in the opening game of the twinbill, as UTT starter pitched a complete game shutout, fanning 11 batters while only allowing six hits and a walk.
The Patriots scored two runs in the second before tallying a run in the third and fourth innings.
In the second game, Belhaven starter
Tyler Wolfe (3-1) was roughed up from the get-go, allowing eight earned on eight hits as the Patriots saw their starting nine go around at the plate twice in the first two innings. The Patriots (13-2, 5-1 ASC) led the contest 8-0 through two innings of play.
But the Blazers (7-6, 2-4) offense finally came to life in the third, snapping a 16-inning scoring drought. After
JG Miley led off the inning with a single and eventually advancing to second on a wild pitch,
Stephen Sexton brought Miley to break the shutout.
In the bottom of the third, the Patriots got the run back to make it 9-1.
Belhaven, however, would chip away in the contest, chalking up two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.
The fourth inning runs were delivered by a two-run home run by
Will Costinett, bringing home
Kreg Garner, who led off the inning with a single.
In the fifth, the Green and Gold made it a ballgame again, With two outs in the inning,
Daniel Ammirati coaxed a single off of starter Cason Adams.
Julyan Urena followed with a double to put runners at second and third for Garner, who brought the runners home on a two-run RBI single.
The Blazers added a run in the seventh to make the contest 9-6 in favor of Texas Tyler. Urena grounded into a double play, bringing home Sexton.
Belhaven had the opportunity in the eighth to cut the deficit even further with Hunter Adams, the UTT closer coming in the eighth. After Costinett and Miley walked sandwiched in between a
Justin Acevedo flyout,
Ty Dean eventually would ground into the inning-ending double play.
In the bottom half of the inning, UTT's bats came to life again, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six times to put the game in favor of the Patriots for good, 15-6.
Sexton finished with two hits in the nightcap, while Garner went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, driving two RBIs.
The Blazers will step out of conference play to take on Eureka College out of Illinois at home Tuesday afternoon. First pitch from Smith-Wills Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m.
