ABILENE, Texas -- The Belhaven softball team lost twice on the road against Hardin-Simmons on Friday afternoon in Abilene. The Blazers dropped game one 1-0, and faltered in game two, 6-2. The Green and Gold tallied just three hits in total throughout the afternoon. Belhaven falls to 10-18 on the year after today's doubleheader losses.
In the first game, the Blazers' bats struggled. Belhaven finished the contest with zero hits, and also left four runners on base.
The fourth inning provided Belhaven's best opportunity to score runs. Kaitlyn Blubaugh and Makayla Reed each reached on base through errors, while Meg Garton also reached on a fielder's choice. The Blazers had the bases loaded up, but came up empty after a two-out strikeout.
Despite Belhaven's hitting struggles, Taylor Surrento and the Blazers' defense kept them in the game. Surrento tossed four strikeouts and pitched all six innings. She also shut out Hardin-Simmons through the first five innings of action. However, the Cowgirls broke through in the bottom of the sixth after a single down the right field line which brought home the lone run of the contest. Hardin-Simmons collected seven hits as a team, but stranded eight base runners.
Belhaven had life in the seventh with Savanna Lyon reaching on a walk to start off the inning. After the promising start to the inning, with one out, HSU turned a double-play at shortstop for the final two outs of the game.
It was much of the same story in game two for the Blazers. Once again, Belhaven's bats went cold, and the Blazers were held hitless through the first three innings of play.
The Cowgirls struck first in the bottom half of the second, where they scored four runs. HSU also tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth after a two-run homer to left.
Belhaven's first hit came in the top of the fourth off a Megan Goss single to shortstop. The Blazers' first runs of the series followed in the sixth. The Green and Gold had the bases stacked with two outs, and Brooke Laigast scored off of a wild pitch. Kayley-Morganne Shields also delivered an RBI single to center to score Goss.
Cassidy Comstock doubled to left field to lead off the seventh, but the Blazers were unable to bring home any runs.
Valiree Blair got the start in the circle and pitched three innings. Lauren Feagin pitched the final three innings of play. The duo both gave up just two earned runs each.
The final game of the series will take place tomorrow morning at 11 a.m at Ellis Field.
