BELTON, Texas - The Blazers hit two home runs at Red Murff Field on Friday night, but BU stranded 12 runners in both games with a 5-3 and 8-5 doubleheader loss to the Crusaders of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
In game one, BU struck first after back-to-back doubles by
Terrell Hodges and
Daniel Ammirati to put BU out in front, 1-0, in the opening frame.
In the second, the Green and Gold tallied their second run on solo shot by
Kreg Garner down the right field line for his third bomb of the season.
UMHB tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run.
With the game knotted at two, the Green and Gold had an opportunity to rally in the fifth. The first three hitters,
Julyan Urena,
Kreg Garner and
JG Miley all reached on base. Urena coaxed out a walk, while Garner reached on catcher's interference. Miley loaded the bases on a bunt single attempting to push the runners to second and third.
The opportunity, however, would not last. With the bases loaded, the next three batters would retire at the plate to end the threat and the bases loaded.
The Crusaders answered with a three-run fifth inning to take the lead, 5-2.
The Green and Gold would tack on the third run of the game in the sixth off of
Stephen Sexton's solo shot to left center field, but it would not be enough.
Tanner Cable, (3-2) who came into the contest leading the ASC in strikeouts, fanned seven in the loss, while allowing four hits on five runs (two earned).
In game two, Mary Hardin-Baylor (12-12, 6-5) scored six times with two three-run innings in the first and second off of BU starter
Landon Boyd.
Belhaven (16-11, 7-7) got on the board in the sixth. Ammirati, with one out in the inning, singled to reach base. Two batters later,
Will Costinett reached on an infield single.
Ryan Wesson loaded the bases for the Green and Gold with a walk.
Enter
Gabe Veith, pinch hitting for Urena. The Pensacola, Fla. native smashed a ball into the left center field alley to clear the bases for the double and his third pinch hit this season, which leads the team. BU trailed 6-3.
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Cru added a run back to push the lead back to four, but BU tacked on two runs in the seventh.
Miley led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Two batters later, Hodges doubled home Miley for an RBI.
After Ammirati pushed Hodges to third on a flyout, Sexton pushed him across with an RBI single.
Belhaven had two opportunities with the tying run at the plate in the seventh and the eighth, but the Green an Gold failed to score.
UMHB added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 8-5, which would hold for the doubleheader sweep for the Cru.
Boyd (2-1) suffered the loss, going two innings, allowing six runs (three earned) with a strikeout.
Tyler Wolfe fanned five in 3.2 innings of relief for the Blazers.
Due to the threat of rain on Saturday, the series finale has been pushed back to 11 a.m.
