BELTON, Texas - The Belhaven baseball team finished up a three-game series with the Crusaders of Mary Hardin-Baylor, as BU was swept by UMHB with a 9-4 loss Saturday at Red Murff Field.
In the first, the Green and Gold (16-12, 7-8) got the scoring going with the small ball.
Terrell Hodges, with one out in the inning, got a base hit. He later took off for second and reached it safely before heading to third on the throwing error by the Mary Hardin-Baylor catcher.
Daniel Ammirati brought Hodges home on a sacrifice fly to get the Green and Gold on the board first.
UMHB (13-12, 7-5) tied the contest in the bottom of the first inning on a fielder's choice, and later took the lead in the frame with a bunt single with runners at the corners.
Belhaven would strike back in the second inning with a solo shot from
Ryan Wesson for his second home run of the year.
However, Mary Hardin-Baylor pushed across seven runs in the bottom half of the second for the deciding factor to lead 9-2 after two complete.
The Blazers would get two back on a
Will Costinett two-run home run in the third, but they were held scoreless for the rest of the contest.
Hodges recorded two hits for BU in the loss, while also swiping two bases.
Hunter Sanford (0-1) went one inning-plus and allowed six earned runs in the loss.
Tyler Dowdy helped BU in the bullpen, going 4.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk while fanning six batters.
The Blazers return to the diamond on Tuesday, as BU will host Huntingdon College in non-conference play. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. from Smith-Wills Stadium.
