TYLER, Texas - The Belhaven baseball team were downed by 13th-ranked UT Tyler in the series opener, 8-3, on Friday night from Irwin Field.
The Green and Gold (7-4, 2-2 ASC) thought they were looking out of the inning in the third. After
Will Costinett reached on an error,
Ryan Wesson lined a ball to the UT Tyler first baseman Alex Bishop, who placed his glove back on the base in time for the double play.
With two outs, that did not stop BU's offense.
JG Miley extended the inning with a walk, and
Ty Dean followed with an infield single.
Terrell Hodges followed by putting BU on the scoreboard with a three-run bomb to left-center field for his third homer of the year.
In the bottom of the third, Blazers starter
Tanner Cable was unable to accomplish the shutdown inning in the frame, with a bases loaded walk scoring the first UTT run.
In the sixth, with Cable nearing 100 pitches, the senior would allow another run via a sacrifice bunt to make it 3-2 in favor of the Blazers headed to the final three innings.
However, it was the Patriots (10-2, 3-1) who got to the Belhaven bullpen, scoring six times, three each in the seventh and the eighth to make the contest 8-3.
Cable (1-1) suffered the loss, pitched 6.1 innings for BU, allowed four runs, seven hits, four walks and six punchouts.
Ryan Cheatham (4-0) earned the win for the Patriots, going seven innings and striking out eight in the win.
Hodges was the only player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 in the loss.
The Green and Gold will look to take the series on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
