AUSTIN, TEXAS - Belhaven University softball fell to the Sul Ross State Lobos, 6-1, in the deciding game of their three-game series Saturday afternoon at Tornado Field in Austin, Texas.
Belhaven was held to just two hits in the batter's box. Sul Ross, meanwhile, recorded eight hits as a team. The Lobos wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, scoring a run each in the first and second innings.
The Blazers loaded the bases in the bottom of third, as
Makayla Reed reached base on a fielder's choice,
Meg Garton singled to left and
Savannah Lyon made it to first safely on a fielding error.
Cassidy Blount then brought home Reed from third with an RBI groundout to third base, cutting the Lobos' lead to one run.
Sul Ross added two runs on two hits in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-1 lead over the Blazers. Belhaven managed just one base runner over the final four innings.
Garton and
Hannah Holloway collected a hit each for the Blazers while
Savannah Johnston,
Marlee Blackwell and
Kaitlyn Blubaugh recorded one walk each.
Lauren Feagin tossed an inning in scoreless relief for the Green and Gold.
Jackie Gonzalez picked up the win in the circle for Sul Ross, striking out five while giving up just one run in seven innings.
Belhaven drops to 10-16 with the defeat while Sul Ross improves to 11-17.
Up next, the Blazers travel to Abilene, Texas March 31 for a three-game series against Hardin-Simmons.
