Belhaven Rallies Late to Sweep Concordia Texas in Slugfest

JACKSON, Miss. - In your typical slugfest where there were 23 combined runs, 32 hits and 13 combined pitchers, the Belhaven baseball team overcame a six-run deficit by scoring seven runs in the final two frames to sweep Concordia Texas,12-11, on Saturday from Smith-Wills Stadium.

The Green and Gold struck first in the bottom of the first in a loud way. After Reed Bolton led off the Blazers' offense with a single, Terrell Hodges sent a fly ball over the left field wall for a two-run shot, his sixth of the year.

Concordia responded in the second with two runs off of starter Hunter Sanford, who made his first collegiate start Saturday.

Belhaven (15-9, 7-6) responded swiftly in the bottom of the second with two more runs to reclaim the lead, 4-2. Ty Dean led off the inning with a single and later stole second. Following a Tee Payne walk, Julyan Urena brought Dean home on an RBI single. Three batters later, during Stephen Sexton's plate appearance, Payne scored on a wild pitch.

After a scoreless third, the Tornados (15-11, 7-5) chipped away at the deficit in the fourth, but eventually took the lead in the fifth for the first time in the game, 5-4, through four and a half innings.

The Blazers added a run in the bottom half of the fifth. After a pop up to start the inning, Dean delivered his second hit of the game with a double. JG MIley brought Dean home on an RBI base knock.

CTX used a grand slam in the sixth inning plus a two-run seventh to push the lead to six runs, 11-5, with Belhaven down to their final nine outs.

In the seventh, with one out, Daniel Ammirati singled to center field, and Will Costinett delivered a two-run bomb for his fourth homer of the year.

After a groundout, BU kept the line moving with two outs to add a run in the seventh. Miley, who reached base on a single and stole second, scored on a fielding error by CTX as Tee Payne reached base on an infield hit.

Trailing 11-8 after Miley scored, with Payne on first, Urena and Bolton each reached base
on back-to-back singles. With the bases loaded and the tying run at first, Hodges came to the plate, the go-ahead run. The senior just missed one with a flyout to retire the side with CTX leading 11-8.

In the eighth, the Blazers' offense went on repeat to start the inning. After an out was recorded, Ammirati reached base with a walk, and Costinett tattooed his second home run in as many at-bats, cutting the deficit back to one run, 11-10.

Dean followed the homer with a single, and Miley followed with the RBI single to score Dean to tie the contest at 11 apiece.

Following a Kreg Garner walk and Miley stealing third, during Urena's plate appearance, a double steal brought Miley home and Garner to second as the CTX catcher tried to throw the ball to second.

Austin Douglas came in the ninth and struck out the side to slam the door in the win for BU.

Sanford went 4.2 innings in his first collegiate start, allowing eight hits, five runs, four earned and struck out four.

Matthew Williams started for Concordia, allowing four earned runs in 1.2 innings.

Ryan Capel (0-1) took the loss for CTX, while David Hall (4-2) allowed one hit in his inning of work in the eighth to secure the win.

BU will conclude its five-game homestand with Tougaloo, beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
