JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven softball team travels to Austin, Texas this weekend for a three-game series against American Southwest Conference (ASC) opponent Concordia Texas. The series begins with a doubleheader Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a single game Saturday at 11 a.m.
Belhaven (4-8) is coming off of a 4-1 week, sweeping Huntingdon College in a doubleheader before taking two of three games from Texas Dallas, who was ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division III at the time.
The Blazers easily defeated Huntingdon in both games, outscoring the Hawks 20-2. In their two wins over Texas Dallas, the Green and Gold held the Comets to just two total runs.
Senior pitcher
Taylor Surrento was named the NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week for her performances against the Hawks and Comets, recording a 3-0 record with a 1.00 ERA. Junior second baseman
Meg Garton earned C Spire Athlete of the Week honors for her play last week, totaling two home runs, six RBI and seven runs.
Senior outfielder
Savannah Johnston had an excellent week for the Blazers as well, tallying four RBI and five hits in eight trips to the plate.
Concordia (10-5) has won nine of its past 12 games after starting the season by dropping two of three games to Louisiana College.
Concordia is coming off of a doubleheader split with Trinity University on Wednesday. Prior to that, the Tornados earned a series win over ASC foe Hardin-Simmons, taking two of three from the Cowgirls on the road. The Tornados own a 6-1 record at home this season.
Concordia ranks sixth in the ASC in batting average (.308), slugging percentage (.399), on-base percentage (.361) and runs scored (69). In the circle, the Tornados have recorded a 3.77 team ERA.
Sophomore outfielder Emma Martino leads the Tornados with a .405 batting average. Junior outfielder Brittani Whitten is hitting .375 while freshman third baseman Summer Harper is batting .333 with three home runs and 11 RBI.
Senior pitcher Shelby Burrus has recorded a perfect 7-0 record with a 2.91 ERA and four complete games.
Belhaven swept Concordia last season in Jackson on March 4-5. The Blazers outscored the Tornados 21-5 over the three-game series.
