PINEVILLE, La. - No. 24 Louisiana College defeated Belhaven softball 7-2 Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Park, completing the series sweep of the Blazers. Belhaven falls to 7-14 with the defeat while Louisiana College improves to 20-2.
Belhaven jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the top of the first inning.
Kaitlyn Blubaugh led off the game with a single to left, and
Meg Garton followed with a double to give the Blazers runners on second and third.
Makayla Reed brought home Blubuagh with a sacrifice fly to left while Garton crossed home plate after a
Savannah Lyon single.
Despite not registering a hit in the bottom of the first, the Wildcats still managed to put one run on the board to make it a 2-1 game.
After a scoreless top of the second for Belhaven, Louisiana College loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame. Sami Walters then stepped to the plate and delivered a bases-clearing triple, giving the Wildcats a 4-2 advantage. LC added another run in the inning as Walters scored on a groundout to shortstop.
The Blazers would manage just one hit for the remainder of the game, a Garton double in the top of the fifth, while the Wildcats tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Savannah Settle earned the win in the circle for Louisiana College, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Jordan Herring threw three innings in relief for Belhaven, allowing just one hit and one run.
Louisiana College recorded just one more hit than the Blazers, but the Wildcats stole a total of nine bases. Shelby Bergeron led LC with four stolen bases.
Garton finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate while Blubaugh, Lyon,
Cassidy Blount and
Crystal Kehtel added a hit each.
Up next, the Blazers travel to Austin, Texas next weekend for a neutral-site series against Sul Ross State University.
