Belhaven Powers Past Rust in Doubleheader Sweep

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven softball team recorded 24 runs and 21 hits Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of Rust College. The Blazers defeated the Bearcats 13-1 in game before completing the sweep with an 11-3 victory.

In game one, Belhaven tallied at least four runs in the first three innings. The 13 runs scored by the Blazers is a season-high.

Brooke Laigast led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, and would eventually come around to score off of throwing error for the first run of the game. Toni Wilson drove in Marlee Blackwell with a single to right center, while Brittany Chetta and Kayley-Morganne Shields added an RBI single each to give the Green and Gold a 4-0 lead heading to the second.

After the Bearcats got on the board in the top of the second with a run, the Blazers tacked on five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to break the game open. Blackwell and Wilson drove in a run each with singles, and Chetta doubled to left to bring in another.

Belhaven would add four more runs in the bottom of third as Blackwell hit a bases-loaded triple to right to bring in three runs and Wilson singled up the middle to plate Blackwell.

Blackwell finished the game with four RBI and three runs scored while going 2-for-2 in the batter's box. Wilson was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs while Chetta finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Laigast scored three times and stole two bases.

Valiree Blair picked up the win in the circle, her first as a member of the Blazers, surrendering just three hits and one run in three innings.

In game two, Belhaven jumped out to an early lead once again, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Mary Austin Barber hit a two-out, bases-loaded single up the middle to plate both Taylor Cowart and Megan Goss

But the Bearcats responded with three runs on just one hit in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead over the Blazers.

Belhaven would even the score at three apiece in the bottom of the second, as Blackwell drove in Anna Peyton Montesi with a double to left center.

In the bottom of the third, the Blazers turned a tie game into a six-run advantage. After Cowart led off with a walk, Wilson, Barber and Cassidy Comstock had consecutive doubles and three runners crossed home plate. Later in the inning, Meg Garton drove in Montesi with a single up the middle while Goss singled to plate Garton.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Crystal Kehtel hit a two-out, two-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth to give the Blazers an 11-3 lead and put an end to the game.

Barber finished with two hits and four RBI while Laigast, Garton, Blackwell, Goss, Kehtel, Wilson, Comstock and Savannah Lyon tallied one hit each.

Lauren Feagin earned the win for the Green and Gold, striking out two while allowing no earned runs in three innings. Feagin moves to 2-0 on the season. Jordan Herring pitched two scoreless innings in relief, recording four strikeouts.

Belhaven improves to 9-14 on the season after today's doubleheader sweep. Next up, the Blazers travel to Austin, Texas this weekend for a three-game, neutral-site series against Sul Ross State.
