ABILENE, Texas - Belhaven baseball took two of the three-game series from the McMurry War Hawks, winning the rubber match, 8-3, Saturday afternoon from Walt Driggers Field.Â
McMurry (8-12, 4-5) got the scoring going off of starter
Tyler Wolfe in the first inning. After Kevin Garza led off the McMurry offense with a hit by pitch, Randy Crevier smashed a two-run home run to put MCM out in front 2-0 before the game was settled in.Â
The Blazers would respond in the top of the second with a four-run inning.
Daniel Ammirati led off the inning with a walk. Following a strikeout,
JG Miley hit a single up the middle, and both Ammirati and Miley advanced 90 feet. putting runners at second and third base.
Reed Bolton loaded the bases with a walk.Â
Julyan Urena followed with a seven-pitch at-bat to draw the bases loaded walk, scoring Ammirati for the first run of the contest for the Green and Gold.Â
Following Urena's walk,
Ty Dean kept the line moving with a RBI single, scoring Miley.Â
Terrell Hodges dumped a ball into right field to score two runs to make it 4-2 in favor of the Blazers.Â
In the fourth inning, the Blazers (12-8, 4-5) tacked on a run in the fourth inning. After Urena led off the inning with a single, Dean was able to push the freshman to second before he took third because of mental lapse by the McMurry defense. Hodges would bring in Urena from third to make it 5-2.Â
In the fifth, the Green and Gold added three runs to put the game out of reach. After a Bolton walk and
Tee Payne reaching base on a McMurry error, Urena smashed a single to right field to plate Bolton.Â
The next batter, Dean, contributed a sacrifice fly to score Payne, and the eighth run, Urena, came across on a pass ball by the Warhawks to make it 8-2 in favor of the Blazers.Â
McMurry would add a run late, but the Blazers defeated the War Hawks, 8-3.Â
Landon Boyd (1-0) came in relief in the second inning and pitched seven shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits and walks each, while striking out five on 88 pitches.Â
The Blazers return to Jackson to begin a five-game homestand at Smith-Wills Stadium. The first game is a crucial one with the Majors of Millsaps College to decide the Maloney Trophy. The teams split their previous two meetings earlier in the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
