PINEVILLE, La. - Belhaven softball dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 24 Louisiana College Friday evening at Wildcat Park, falling 3-1 in game one before faltering 5-2 in the second game.Â
Neither team could get much going in the batter's box, with Louisiana College totaling 10 hits for the night and Belhaven collecting just nine hits in the doubleheader.Â
In game one, the Blazers and the Wildcats entered the sixth inning locked in a scoreless draw. Belhaven starting pitcher
Taylor Surrento had a no-hitter through four innings, allowing her first hit with one out in the bottom of the fifth.Â
The Blazers were the first to put a run on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
Makayla Reed hit a one-out single, and
Cassidy Blount drove her in with a two-out double to the gap in left field.Â
But the Wildcats finally found their offense in the bottom half of the sixth, tallying four hits and three runs. With runners on second and third, Shea Smith laid down a bunt single to even the game at 1-1. Morgan Dennis then drove in Mattie Stine and Smith with a double to center.Â
Kaitlyn Blubaugh hit a two-out single to left in the top of the seventh, but was left stranded as Louisiana College starting pitcher Savannah Settle recorded her eighth strike out for the final out of the ballgame.Â
Settle went the distance for the Wildcats, allowing just one run and five hits to move to 9-2 on the season.Â
Blount finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Blazers.Â
Louisiana College took an early lead in game two, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first.Â
Belhaven responded with two runs in the top of the third when
Brittany Chetta scored off of a LC fielding error, and
Meg Garton drove in Blubaugh with an RBI single.Â
The Blazers lead was short-lived, however, as the Wildcats came right back with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 advantage.Â
The Green and Gold would go without a hit for the final four innings of play and the Wildcats would add two insurance runs, one in the fourth and another in the sixth.Â
Blount was 2-for-3 once again to lead Belhaven while Blubaugh and Garton recorded one hit each.Â
The Blazers and Wildcats wrap up their three-game set Saturday at 12 p.m.Â
