HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Belhaven men's tennis team split their first two matches in Hilton Head on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of the Spring TennisFest. The Blazers fell in their first match against UT Dallas 6-2, but won easily against Westminster (Pa.) 8-1. With the win in Wednesday's match, Belhaven improves to 5-4 on the season.
Against UT Dallas, the Blazers only won one doubles match at the No. 1 spot. Rene Ramos and Joan Soler held on for a 9-7 victory. Ramos was also the only Blazer to tally a victory in singles action with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles.
The Green and Gold would bounce back today with an 8-1 victory over Westminster. The Blazers took two out of three doubles matches, and then swept singles play. Ramos and Soler won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Sebastian Barrientos and Travous Wilson won easily by a score of 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Ramos now remains perfect on the year in singles action after winning 6-1, 6-0. Ivan Alberto Kerkoc, Pawel Tarasewicz, Soler, Tracy Hilaire, and Grant Matherne all won in straight sets respectively.
Belhaven will return to action at the Spring TennisFest tomorrow against Connecticut College at 8 a.m.
