CLINTON, Miss. - Belhaven softball earned a 5-1 victory over the University of the Ozarks Saturday afternoon in Clinton, Miss., completing the series sweep of the Eagles.
Jordan Herring threw a complete game for the Blazers in the circle, allowing just six hits and one unearned run. The junior pitcher struck out five batters and picked up her second win of the series.
Belhaven (7-11) got on the board in the first inning, as
Makayla Reed hit a two-out single and eventually came around to score on a Ozarks fielding error.
The Ozarks (3-12) would even the score in the top of the second inning, when Hailey Ostrander singled to right field to score Krysten Shavers.
Cassidy Comstock led off the bottom of the third with an infield single and a stolen base to give the Blazers a runner in scoring position.
Meg Garton then hit a one-out double to the gap in left-center to plate Comstock and give Belhaven a 2-1 lead. Garton would then advance to third on a Reed groundout, and a wild pitch brought her all the way home.
In the fourth,
Mary Austin Barber crossed home plate for the fourth Blazers run.
Kayley-Morganne Shields hit a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to plate
Toni Wilson and round out the Belhaven scoring.
Belhaven and the Ozarks tallied six hits each, but the Blazers left just four runners stranded while the Eagles finished with 10 runners left on base.
The Blazers totaled three stolen bases for the second straight game, with Barber, Comstock and
Brooke Laigast recording one each.
Garton finished 2-for-3 at the plate, giving her seven hits for the series. Reed, Wilson, Shields and Comstock added one hit each for the Green and Gold.
Up next, the Blazers travel to Pineville, La. next weekend for a three-game series against Louisiana College. The Green and Gold will play a single game Friday, March 17 before finishing the series on Saturday with a doubleheader.
