Men's Basketball Preview: UT Tyler and LeTourneau

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven men's basketball team makes its final road trip of the season this week, traveling to Tyler, Texas to face the University of Texas at Tyler on Thursday, before heading to Longview, Texas to take on LeTourneau University on Saturday. 

Belhaven (4-17) will enter Thursday's matchup with Texas-Tyler having won two of its past three games. The Blazers defeated the University of the Ozarks in two straight games before falling to the University of Texas at Dallas on Saturday. Belhaven shot a season-high 52 percent from the three-point line on 14 makes, also a season-high, in the first win over the Ozarks. In the second victory over the Eagles, junior point guard Ron Davis tied a program record in assists, dishing out 14 helpers. 

The Blazers are allowing opponents to score 77.5 points per game over the last five games, which is 10 points below their season average. Over that stretch, opponents are shooting just 27 percent from behind the arc. 

Freshman guard Rick Hodum has played a big role in Belhaven's recent success. Hodum is averaging 10.2 points and five rebounds while shooting 46 percent on three-pointers over the past five games. Sophomore guard Brent Webber is pouring in 12.8 points on 48 percent three-point shooting in the last five Blazers contests. 

University of Texas at Tyler
Texas-Tyler (14-8) has lost its last two games, falling to East Texas Baptist and Louisiana College on the road. The Patriots had previously won six in a row and compiled a 7-2 record in the month of January. 

UT Tyler allows a conference-low 73.7 points per game, and rank second in the ASC in field goal percentage defense (.421) and rebounding margin (+4.1). The Patriots have held their opponents to 70 points or below in nine games this season. 

Senior guard Jordan Francis is averaging a team-high 13.9 points per game, while junior forward Anthony Melvin is adding 12.9 points and 7.5 rebounds. 

UT Tyler defeated Belhaven 75-73 on Jan. 21 in Jackson, despite the Blazers forcing the Patriots into 24 turnovers and 25 percent shooting from downtown. 

LeTourneau University
LeTourneau (17-5) has won 13 of its past 14 contests, with the only loss coming in overtime to Louisiana College. The YellowJackets own a 13-1 record at home this season. In the first NCAA Division III Region rankings released Wednesday, LeTourneau earned a No. 5 ranking in the South Region. 

LeTourneau leads the ASC with a +8.6 scoring margin, averaging 85.2 points per game while allowing 76.6 per contest. The YellowJackets are outscoring their opponents by 11.5 points per game over the past 14 games. 

LeTourneau takes care of the ball well, turning the ball over just 9.7 times per game, and ranks third in the ASC in three-pointers made (9.1) and three-point percentage (.370). 

Junior guard Alec Colhoff paces the YellowJackets with a 15.4 scoring average, and ranks third in the conference in three-point shooting percentage (.445). Senior point guard Jeff Martin is averaging 13.4 points and 5.7 assists per game. 

The Blazers fell to LeTourneau, 102-78, in Jackson on Jan. 19.
