JACKSON, Miss. - A five-run fourth inning propelled the Belhaven softball team to a 5-1 victory over No. 18 Texas Dallas Friday afternoon at McLeod Field. The win is the third in a row for the Blazers.
Belhaven (3-7) trailed Texas Dallas (10-2) early, as Jessica Vlazek hit a solo home run for the Comets in the top of the third inning.
After totaling just one hit through the first three innings, the Blazers exploded for five hits and five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Hannah Holloway and
Makayla Reed led off the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles, and
Meg Garton drew a one-out walk to load the bases.
Cassidy Blount then crushed a double to the left field wall, and Holloway, Reed and Garton all came home to score.
Three batters later, a
Savannah Johnston single plated
Mary Austin Barber for the fourth Blazers run of the inning.
Kaitlyn Blubaugh followed that up with a single to right field to score
Crystal Kehtel.
The Comets put two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Belhaven starting pitcher
Taylor Surrento was able to work her way out of each situation without surrendering a run.
Surrento earns the win in the circle, her second of the year. The senior struck out six batters while allowing just five hits in seven innings.
The Blazers and the Comets wrap up their three-games series with a doubleheader Saturday. The first game is set for a 12 p.m. start.
