JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven softball team earned a doubleheader split with No. 18 Texas Dallas Saturday afternoon, falling 14-6 in game one before defeating the Comets 2-1 in game two.
In game one, Belhaven found themselves in a seven-run hole heading into the bottom of the second inning. The Blazers put two runs on the scoreboard in the second, as
Mary Austin Barber singled to left to score
Meg Garton and
Cassidy Blount came home on a
Kaitlyn Blubaugh grounder to shortstop.
UT Dallas added two more runs in the top of the third before Garton hit a two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame to make the score 8-4.
Makayla Reed and
Savannah Lyon recorded back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth to round out the scoring for the Blazers.
Belhaven tallied 10 hits as a team, which ties the season-high mark previously set on Feb. 11 versus No. 5 East Texas Baptist. Garton, Barber and Lyon led the Blazers with two hits each while Blubaugh, Reed, Blount and
Savannah Johnston added one hit apiece.
Melissa Livermore and Heather Gilbert paced the Comets with four hits each. Texas Dallas collected nine stolen bases, led by Stefanie Polderman's four pilfers.
While game one featured plenty of scoring and hitting, game two was quite the opposite, as the two teams combined for just three runs and five hits.
Belhaven senior pitcher
Taylor Surrento tossed a three-hit complete game, striking out a career-high nine batters.
In the bottom of the second, Blount drew a one-walk and Garton was hit by a pitch to give the Blazers runners on first and second.
Megan Goss then hit a two-out single and Blount came around from to score and give Belhaven a 1-0 lead. Two passed balls later, and Garton crossed home for the second Green and Gold run.
UT Dallas threatened in the top of the fourth as Hope Griffith hit a leadoff double, but Surrento struck out the next three Comet batters to keep the Blazers' two-run lead intact.
The Comets finally broke through in the fifth when Griffith scored from first on a Belhaven fielding error.
With the Blazers nursing just a one-run lead heading to the seventh, Surrento retired the UTD side in order to seal the win for the Green and Gold. She moves to 3-4 on the season, picking up her third win in a row.
After taking two of three games from the nationally-ranked Comets, Belhaven improves to 4-8 on the season. Texas Dallas now stands at 11-3 for the year.
Next up, the Blazers host a doubleheader against Rust College Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m.
