Blazers Earn Doubleheader Sweep of Huntingdon

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven softball picked up its first wins of the 2017 season Thursday afternoon, defeating the Huntingdon College Hawks in both games of a home doubleheader. The Blazers earned an 8-2 victory in game one before cruising to a 12-0 win in game two. 

The Blazers bats came to life Tuesday, as the team tallied 17 total hits and eight hits for extra bases. In the circle, a combination of four different Belhaven pitchers surrendered just 10 hits and one walk to the Hawks. 

Belhaven improves to 2-7 with the wins while Huntingdon remains winless on the season and drops to 0-8. 

The Blazeers will look to keep the winning ways going this weekend, when the play host to American Southwest Conference foe Texas Dallas. The three-game series kicks off with a single game Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday. 

Game 1: Belhaven 8, Huntingdon 2 
Huntingdon struck first in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning when Raina Lanier singled up the middle to plate Brandi Blair and Lindsey Selph. 

Belhaven got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Makayla Reed scored from second off of an error by the Hawks' shortstop. 

After Belhaven starting pitcher Taylor Surrento struck out the Huntingdon side in the top of the second, the Blazers offense put four runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning to give the Green and Gold a 5-2 lead. 

Hannah Holloway hit a bases-loaded single to right field to score Meg Garton while Marlee Blackwell, Kaitlyn Blubaugh and Holloway all came around to cross home plate when a Huntingdon error allowed a Reed grounder to go all the way to the fence. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Crystal Kehtel hit a leadoff double and Surrento followed with a single to right to put runners on second and third with no outs. Garton then crushed a three-run homer to right center, giving the Blazers three insurance runs. 

Surrento picked up the win in the circle for Belhaven, finishing with seven strikeouts in seven innings. 

Game 2: Belhaven 12, Huntingdon 0
Belhaven scored all 12 of its runs in game two in the first three innings. Holloway, Reed and Cassidy Blount each scored a run in the first inning to give the Blazers an early 3-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the second, the Blazers patiently drew three walks, while Reed and Savannah Johnston recorded run-scoring doubles. By the end of of the inning, the Green and Gold had added six more runs and took a nine-run advantage into the third inning. 

The Blazers continued the offensive onslaught in the third, as Brooke Laigast and Johnston had back-to-back two-out doubles to score two runs, and Brittany Chetta brought home another with a single to center. 

Junior pitcher Lauren Feagin earns the win for Belhaven, allowing just three hits in 3.2 innings of relief work. 

Johnston finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Reed collected two doubles, two runs and two runs driven in.
