Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Layton Jackson

Women's Hoops Cruise Past Ozarks, 85-64

JACKSON, Miss. - Thanks to six Blazers in double figures, the Belhaven women's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak by defeating Ozarks, 85-64, Thursday evening inside Rugg Arena. 

After a basket to start the game by Ozarks' Delanei Stephens, the Green and Gold came out shooting, going on a 14-2 run in about a six and a half minute span in the opening quarter. 

Belhaven (11-9) went off from the floor early, shooting 50 percent (8-for-16) from the field. Ozarks was unable make shots early, shooting 18.8 percent (3-for-16) in the quarter. BU outscored UO 21-8 in the first 10 minutes of action. 

In the second quarter, Ozarks (9-12) kept the stanza close, but it was the Green and Gold who took a 43-28 lead into the locker room. 

The Green and Gold began to pull away in the third, starting the frame on an 11-0 run and got the lead as high as 28 in the Blazers victory. 

The Blazers, in the contest, shot 45.9 percent (34-for-74) from the field, the third-highest this season. The 34 field goals made marks the most in a game this season for the Green and Gold. 

Six Blazers earned double figures in the point column. Two Blazers, Samara Dingiswayo and Vamikka Smith, earned double-doubles. Dingiswayo tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Smith totaled 12 points and boards each and four assists. 

Sierra Pittman went 7-of-8 from the field and finished with 14 points, five rebounds and assisted on four shots.

Candler Gregory and Ke'Asia Gray each tallied 13 points for the Blazers. Gray added seven boards to her line. 

Kelsey Brown finished with 10 points and three assists for BU. 

Belhaven only allowed UO two 3-pointers in the game compared to nine made shots from beyond the arc last Saturday. 

Diamond Goodwin totaled 16 points to lead the Ozarks, while Rose Robinson and Delanei Stephens each scored 10. 

The Blazers return to the floor on Saturday afternoon, when ASC East leader UT Dallas comes to Jackson. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. inside Rugg Arena.
