TYLER, TEXAS - Belhaven softball dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader at No. 1 Texas-Tyler. The Patriots defeated the Blazers 8-0, 5-1 to complete the series sweep of the Green and Gold.
Game 1: Texas-Tyler 8, Belhaven 0
The Blazers and the Patriots were locked into a scoreless tie until UT Tyler exploded for an eight-run fourth inning.
Belhaven tallied a hit in each of the first four innings, but were unable to push a run across.
Makayla Reed finished game one a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.
Cassidy Blount and
Brittany Chetta added a hit each for the Blazers.
Whitney Romero picked up the complete game shutout win for the Patriots, striking out five in five innings pitched.
Game 2: Texas-Tyler 5, Belhaven 1
Belhaven pitchers
Jordan Herring and
Taylor Surrento combined to allow just seven Texas-Tyler hits in game two, but the Patriots recorded timely hits with runners on base to come away with the win.
The Patriots jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Blazers responded in the top of the second when
Crystal Kehtel drilled a one-out solo home run to tie the game at one apiece.
It remained a tie game until the bottom of the fifth when a Bianca Van Vlerah double scored Kaylee Prather from second. KK Stevens then singled to center to plate Van Vlerah.
The Patriots added two more insurance runs in the sixth with a two-run Prather double.
Reed finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Blazers.
Herring surrendered two earned runs and struck out three batters in five innings.
Alaina Kissinger earned the win in the circle for UT Tyler, allowing just one earned run in seven innings pitched.
Belhaven drops to 0-7 after Saturday's results while Texas-Tyler improves to 8-0.
The Blazers return to action Tuesday, Feb. 21, hosting Huntingdon College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
