TYLER, TEXAS - The Belhaven softball team looked to be headed towards an upset of No. 1 Texas-Tyler Friday evening, but a 13-run sixth inning for the Patriots derailed the Blazers plans, and the Green and Gold fell 13-2.
Belhaven (0-5) starting pitcher
Valiree Blair shut down the Texas-Tyler (6-0) batters through the first five innings, surrendering no runs and just two hits.
All three of the Blazers' hits for the game came in top of the fifth inning.
Kaitlyn Blubaugh and
Makayla Reed recorded back-to-back one-out singles to give the Green and Gold runners on first and second.
Megan Goss brought both runners in to score with a two-out double to left center, giving Belhaven a 2-0 lead over the defending national champions.
Texas-Tyler's powerful offense finally came to life in the bottom of the sixth. The Patriots tallied 11 hits in the inning and smacked three home runs, including two grand slams.
KK Stevens finished 3-for-4 at the plate with six RBI and two runs scored for the Patriots. Cheyenne Thompson went 2-for-4 with two runs and five RBI.
Alaina Kissinger picked up the win in the circle for the Patriots, giving up two earned runs in six innings pitched.
The Blazers and the Patriots wrap up their three-game slate with a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 1 p.m. from Suddenlink Field.
