Brown Strikes Career Best as Belhaven Splits Twin Bill with McMurry

JACKSON, Miss. - Despite falling in extra innings in game one of the doubleheader, 5-4 in nine innings, the Belhaven baseball team saw Shane Brown fan a career high eight McMurry batters en route to the Blazers 4-3 victory to split Friday night's twin bill from Smith-Wills Stadium.

In game one of the doubleheader, McMurry got to Belhaven starter Tanner Cable with an early run on an RBI groundout by Chris Baker right out of the gate.

Belhaven responded in the bottom of the first with two runs to claim the lead. After a JG Miley walk, Ty Dean got a friendly Smith-Wills bounce to round the bases for a RBI triple. Terrell Hodges brought him home on with a RBI single. BU had a 2-1 lead after one inning of play.

While Cable settled in on the bump, the Blazers pushed the lead to three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Will Costinett brought the lumber for his first home run of the season to extend the lead to 4-1 through five innings of play.

In the sixth, however, Cable entered a road block. After striking out Robert White, Cable then walked Payton Stokes, and the next batter, Tyler Jenkins, smashed a home run to left field to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Baker followed with a triple to right, and he would later score on a Matthew Chalk fielder's choice to tie the contest at four runs apiece.

The game would go into extra innings, and in the ninth, the War Hawks broke the tie in the top half of the frame. After a hit by pitch by Jordan Speck and back-to-back wild pitches by Austin Douglas (0-1) got the runner to third, Noah Clarkson reached base on a Belhaven error to give the MCM the 5-4 advantage.

John Eric Cortez (1-1), who relieved started Juan Valadez, pitched four shutout innings for McMurry to earn his first win of the season.

Cable, despite the wall he ran into in the sixth, increased his composure on the mound in his second start of the year. The Southaven, Miss. native went six innings, allowed four runs and struck out six in a no decision.

In game two, which became the 7-inning game after the first game went into extra innings, Shane Brown started similarly to Cable. MCM (2-3) struck first once again. After back-to-back strikeouts by White and Stokes, Jenkins doubled and later scored on a Baker double.

The Blazers (3-1) knotted the score at one run apiece in the bottom half of the second, After a Costinett walk and advancing to second on a balk, Justin Acevedo singled via a bunt while pushing Costinett to third. Kreg Garner brought him home on a groundout to second base.

The War Hawks would break the 1-1 tie in the fourth inning. With back-to-back doubles by Baker and Chalk, that pushed the lead back to McMurry. They would add one more run with a RBI groundout by Speck.

The lead would not last long for MCM. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Blazers lined a rally. After Miley tripled, Ty Dean brought him home on a RBI single. Following a pitching change, Hodges brought the tying and eventual go-ahead run across with a two-run dinger.

Brown (1-0) settled the rest of the way, as he fanned a career high eight War Hawks on 101 pitches in a complete game effort, the third of his career.

Hodges finished the day with four hits, two in each game of Friday's doubleheader, while adding three RBIs.

The Green and Gold will look to win the series Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch from Smith-Wills against the War Hawks.
