Softball Preview: Millsaps and No. 1 Texas-Tyler

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven softball team will host local rival Millsaps College Wednesday before traveling to Tyler, Texas to face off against No. 1 Texas-Tyler for a three-game set Friday and Saturday. Wednesday's game begins at 3 p.m. at McLeod Field while the weekend series begins with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and wraps up with a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.

Belhaven (0-3) will look to rebound from a tough season-opening series versus No. 5 East Texas Baptist this past weekend. The Blazers dropped all three games to the nationally-ranked Tigers, falling 7-2, 11-0 and 9-4.

Senior outfielder Hannah Holloway went 4-for-8 for the series, including a double and a two-run home run. Junior second baseman Meg Garton smacked two doubles and recorded a .500 on-base percentage.

Millsaps College
Millsaps (3-3) is coming off of a doubleheader sweep of Austin College. The Majors defeated Austin 19-2 in game one before earning a 6-2 victory in game two. The Majors opened the season by losing both games of a doubleheader to Louisiana College and then split two games with Southwestern University. All six games were on the road.

Millsaps finished the 2016 season with a 22-21 overall record and an 11-9 mark in Southern Athletic Association play.

This is the only meeting of the 2017 season between the two Jackson rivals. The last meeting dates all the way back to April 21, 2007, when the Blazers defeated the Majors 8-1.

University of Texas at Tyler
Texas-Tyler (5-0) is coming off of a three-game sweep of ASC opponent Hardin-Simmons. Prior to that, the reigning NCAA Division III national champions opened the season with wins over Pacific and Centenary.

The Patriots have scored 47 runs in five games while allowing opponents to score just eight runs. UT Tyler has shut out its opponent in three games this season.

Sophomore outfielder Cheyenne Thompson leads the Patriots with a .765 average while recording two home runs, 11 RBI and eight runs. Senior Kaylee Prather is hitting .625 and has scored 10 runs and stolen seven bases.

As a team, UT Tyler is batting .443 with a .618 slugging percentage.

In the circle, freshman Whitney Romero has a 2-0 record and has yet to allow a run in 12 innings pitched. Senior Alaina Kissinger owns a 3-0 record with a 0.57 ERA in 15.2 innings.

Belhaven took two of three games in Jackson from Texas-Tyler last season, who were ranked No. 1 at that time as well.
