JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven softball dropped the finale of their season-opening series versus No. 5 East Texas Baptist, falling 9-4 to the Tigers Saturday afternoon at McLeod Field.
Belhaven (0-3) recorded more hits than the Tigers, totaling 10 to ETBU's nine. But the Tigers used the long ball to jump out to an early 5-0 lead over the Blazers, hitting a two-run home run in each of the first two innings.
The Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the third, as
Savannah Lyon hit an RBI single up the middle to plate
Meg Garton from second.
After ETBU (3-0) added four more runs in the top of the fifth, senior outfielder
Hannah Holloway smacked a two-run homer of her own over the left field fence in the bottom half of the frame.
In the sixth, Garton doubled to center with two outs to score
Kaitlyn Blubaugh and round out the Blazers scoring.
Lyon,
Makayla Reed and
Cassidy Blount tallied two hits apiece for Belhaven while Garton, Holloway, Blubaugh and
Mary Austin Barber had one hit each.
Junior pitcher
Valiree Blair tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
The Blazers will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, hosting crosstown rival Millsaps College at 3 p.m.
