Blazers Drop Season-Opening Doubleheader to No. 5 ETBU

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven softball team dropped both games of their season-opening doubleheader to No. 5 East Texas Baptist, falling 7-2 in game one and 11-0 in game two.

The Blazers (0-2) took an early 1-0 lead over the Tigers in the bottom of the second inning of game one when Kaitlyn Blubaugh hit a two-out single to score Makayla Reed from second.

ETBU (4-0) quickly evened the score in the top of third when Kaitlyn Hollingshead smacked a home run over the left field fence.

The Tigers struck again in the fourth as Gabby Gonzales hit a two-run homer. ETBU added another run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead over the Blazers.

In the bottom of the fifth, Meg Garton and Hannah Holloway recorded back-to-back one-out doubles to put runners on second and third. Savannah Lyon then grounded out to second to score to Savannah Johnston, who had come in to run for Holloway.

But the Tigers scored two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh, and the Green and Gold was unable to put any more runs on the board.

In game two, the Blazers were held to just two hits while the Tigers went for 11 runs on nine hits.

ETBU used a three-run second inning and a four-run fourth to put Belhaven in a seven-run hole that they were unable to dig out of.

Jayme Perez tossed a complete game shutout for the Tigers, while also going 3-for-4 in the batter's box with a home run, four RBI and two runs.

Holloway finished the day with three hits in five at-bats while Crystal Kehtel was 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Blazers and the Tigers will wrap up their three-game set on Saturday. First pitch from McLeod Field is set for 12 p.m.
